Numerology alphabet chart: number for each letter (A to Z)
Every letter of the English alphabet has a number in numerology. Here are both letter charts used in India, the Chaldean and the Pythagorean, a small tool that adds up any name, and a plain explanation of how the two differ.
Find the number for each letter of a name
Type a name in English letters. The tool shows the value of each letter in both charts and the two totals, worked out the same way as our name numerology calculator.
C = Chaldean value, P = Pythagorean value
Type a name to see the number for each letter.

Numerology alphabet chart A to Z
The number for every letter in both systems. The Chaldean value is the one most Indian numerologists use for the name number; the Pythagorean value is the one Western numerology uses.

| B | 2 | 2 | No |
| C | 3 | 3 | No |
| D | 4 | 4 | No |
| E | 5 | 5 | Yes |
| F | 8 | 6 | No |
| G | 3 | 7 | No |
| H | 5 | 8 | No |
| I | 1 | 9 | Yes |
| J | 1 | 1 | No |
| K | 2 | 2 | No |
| L | 3 | 3 | No |
| M | 4 | 4 | No |
| N | 5 | 5 | No |
| O | 7 | 6 | Yes |

| W | 6 | 5 | No |
| X | 5 | 6 | No |

| Z | 7 | 8 | No |
Y is counted as a consonant by default. Some numerologists count it as a vowel when it sounds like one, as in Mythili.
Chaldean numerology chart
In the Chaldean chart the letters are grouped by their sound, so the values do not follow the order of the alphabet. The values run from 1 to 8, and no letter is given 9.
| Number | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A I J Q Y |
| 2 | B K R |
| 3 | C G L S |
| 4 | D M T |
| 5 | E H N X |
| 6 | U V W |
| 7 | O Z |
| 8 | F P |
| 9 | No letter (9 is kept apart) |
Pythagorean numerology chart
The Pythagorean chart numbers the alphabet in order from 1 to 9 and then starts again: A is 1, I is 9, J is 1 again, and so on to Z, which is 8.
| Number | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A J S |
| 2 | B K T |
| 3 | C L U |
| 4 | D M V |
| 5 | E N W |
| 6 | F O X |
| 7 | G P Y |
| 8 | H Q Z |
| 9 | I R |
The Pythagorean chart is named after the Greek thinker Pythagoras, who taught that numbers lie behind everything. The letter chart in its present form comes from Western numerology of the early twentieth century.
Chaldean vs Pythagorean: the difference in plain words
Both charts turn letters into numbers, but they come from different traditions and add up a name in different ways. The same letter can have a different number: I is 1 in Chaldean and 9 in Pythagorean.
| Point | Chaldean | Pythagorean |
|---|---|---|
| Letter values | 1 to 8; no letter is given 9 | 1 to 9 |
| How letters are grouped | By sound | In alphabet order |
| How a name is added | All letters together into one total (the compound number), then reduced to one digit | Each word reduced on its own, then the words added and reduced |
| 11, 22 and 33 | Reduced like any other total | Kept as master numbers |
| Compound numbers | Totals from 10 to 52 are read for meaning | Not used |
| Mostly used for | The name number (Naamank) and name correction in India | Expression, Soul Urge and Personality in Western numerology |
Which one to use? If you are checking a name the way it is usually done in India, for the name number, a name correction or a business name, use the Chaldean chart. Our name numerology calculator gives the Chaldean number first and shows the Pythagorean numbers alongside as a second view. Whichever chart you use, use it every time and say which one a number comes from.
Cheiro and the Chaldean chart
Cheiro was the pen name of William John Warner (1866 to 1936), an Irish palmist and astrologer. His Cheiro’s Book of Numbers, published in London by Herbert Jenkins, made the Chaldean letter values widely known, which is why the Chaldean chart is often called Cheiro numerology. Cheiro presented the chart as an old Chaldean and Hebrew alphabet; the name points to ancient Babylon, but the chart as used today, on the English alphabet, comes from his book and the writers after him.

Worked example: Kavya Joshi
Here is the name Kavya Joshi worked out letter by letter, exactly as the tool above does it.
KAVYA
- KC 2P 2
- AC 1P 1
- VC 6P 4
- YC 1P 7
- AC 1P 1
Chaldean 11Pythagorean 15 → 6
JOSHI
- JC 1P 1
- OC 7P 6
- SC 3P 1
- HC 5P 8
- IC 1P 9
Chaldean 17Pythagorean 25 → 7
Chaldean name number
1
11 + 17 = 28 → 10 → 1
Pythagorean (Expression) number
4
6 + 7 = 13 → 4
Chaldean: the letters of the whole name add up to 28, which reduces to 28 → 10 → 1. The Chaldean name number is 1. Because 28 lies between 10 and 52, it is also read as a compound number: see Chaldean compound numbers.
Pythagorean: each word is reduced on its own (KAVYA 15 → 6, JOSHI 25 → 7), then the word results are added and reduced: 6 + 7 = 13 → 4. The Expression number is 4.
So the same name gives 1 in one chart and 4 in the other. Neither is wrong: they are two methods, which is why a number should always be read with the chart it comes from.

Alphabet numbers: common questions
What is the number for each alphabet in numerology?
It depends on the chart. The A to Z chart above gives both: the Chaldean value, used by most Indian numerologists, and the Pythagorean value, used in Western numerology. A is 1 in both charts, but I is 1 in Chaldean and 9 in Pythagorean.
Why does the Chaldean chart have no 9?
In the Chaldean tradition 9 is treated as a sacred number: Cheiro wrote that it stands for the nine-lettered name of God, so it is not given to any single letter. A name can still add up to 9 or reduce to 9; only the letters never carry it.
Which chart is more accurate, Chaldean or Pythagorean?
Neither can be shown to be more accurate; they are two traditions. In India the Chaldean chart is used more for the name number and name correction, and the Pythagorean chart for the Western Expression, Soul Urge and Personality numbers. What matters is to use one chart consistently.
Should I count my middle name and surname?
Use the full name you actually use: the one you sign with and write on your documents. Each spelling gives its own number, so if you use two forms, for example with and without a middle name, check both.
Is Y a vowel in numerology?
Y is counted as a consonant by default. Some numerologists count it as a vowel when it sounds like one, as in Mythili. That changes only the vowel and consonant numbers (Soul Urge and Personality), not the totals on this page.
How do I count a name written in Hindi?
Both charts work on English letters, so write the name the way you spell it in English, for example on your PAN card or passport. Different spellings give different numbers, so use the one you really use.
