Dates are for sunrise at Nagpur, in the North and Central Indian (purnimanta) tradition. Tithi times are the same across India; in some cities and traditions a festival can fall a day apart.
How the dates are worked out
Each festival has a rule: a tithi that must run at a set time of day (madhyahna for Ganesh Chaturthi, midnight for Janmashtami, pradosh kaal for Diwali, moonrise for Karwa Chauth), bhadra checked for Raksha Bandhan and Holika Dahan, or the Sun entering Makara for Makar Sankranti. The rules are applied to the Sun and Moon positions computed for each year.
Questions about Hindu festivals
Which festival is today?
The line at the top of this page shows today’s festival, or the next one when there is none today. It follows the date in India (IST) and updates in your browser.
For which city are the dates worked out?
For Nagpur, in the North and Central Indian (purnimanta) tradition. The tithi times hold for all of India; the day of a festival can differ by a day in some cities and traditions, and the festival pages say where.
How are the festival dates calculated?
Each festival has a rule: a tithi that must run at a set part of the day (sunrise, midday, afternoon, the evening after sunset, midnight or moonrise), or the Sun entering a sign. The positions of the Sun and Moon are computed for every year, so the dates are not copied from a printed list.
Why does my family panchang give a different date?
Panchangs follow different rules for the same festival (Smarta or Vaishnava, the amanta or purnimanta month, the city they are made for). When yours differs, follow the one your family or temple uses.
Can Namieta suggest a muhurat for my own puja or event?
Yes. For a griha pravesh, a purchase, a new start or a family puja she can look at the panchang together with your chart. Message on WhatsApp with the occasion and the dates you are considering.
