Times are in IST for Nagpur. A window that runs past midnight carries the next date; the day is the Hindu day, from sunrise to the next sunrise.
The rules in plain words
A date is listed only when all of these hold. They follow Muhurta Chintamani as most printed panchangs apply it for a new house:
- Nakshatra: Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati.
- Tithi: in Shukla paksha Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi and Trayodashi; in Krishna paksha Pratipada, Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami and Ekadashi. The other tithis, Amavasya and Purnima among them, are avoided.
- Weekday: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday; Sunday and Tuesday are avoided (the weekday runs from sunrise).
- Lunar month (amanta): Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Kartik, Margashirsha, Magha and Phalguna; Chaitra, Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwin and Pausha are avoided.
- Adhik maas (the extra lunar month) is avoided in full.
- Jupiter (Guru) and Venus (Shukra) not set (asta). The days on which they are too near the Sun to be seen at dawn or dusk are closed, with 3 days before setting (vriddhatva) and 3 days after rising (shishutva).
These dates are for entering a newly built or newly bought home (apoorva griha pravesh). Moving back after a journey or a repair is often given more freedom by tradition.
The lagna at the time of entry is not checked here. A fixed sign (Vrishabha, Simha, Vrischika or Kumbha) is commonly preferred; it is chosen for the place of the house.
Your own panchang and your own charts
These are general dates from the panchang, the first step. Your family’s own panchang may differ, because traditions differ on the months (for example Kartik before Devuthani, or Margashirsha) and the weekdays. A muhurat for your home is then chosen from the Kundli of the head of the family, the Moon sign for that day and the house itself, so it can fall on one of these days or rule some of them out.

Questions about griha pravesh muhurat
How are the griha pravesh dates chosen?
Each window has one of the eight griha pravesh nakshatras and a good tithi, falls on a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday in an allowed lunar month, and avoids adhik maas and the days when Jupiter or Venus is set. The rules are listed on this page.
Which months are good for griha pravesh?
Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Magha and Phalguna are the months most texts praise, and Kartik and Margashirsha are also used. Chaitra, Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwin and Pausha are avoided, and so is an adhik month.
Why are Sunday and Tuesday left out?
Both are ruled by fiery planets, the Sun and Mars, and most panchangs avoid them for entering a new home. Some families also avoid Saturday; the dates here keep it, as most published lists do.
Are these times the same for every city?
Nakshatra and tithi change at the same moment everywhere, so the IST times hold across India. The day is counted from sunrise, which moves by a few minutes from city to city, and the lagna is chosen for the place of the house.
Should the Vastu puja be done on the same day?
Many families do the Vastu shanti or griha pravesh puja on the morning of entry, within the window. The house construction Vastu guide ends with the griha pravesh steps commonly followed.
