How the Navamsa chart is made

  1. Make the birth chart. The lagna and the nine grahas are placed as in the Janam Kundli: sidereal positions with the Lahiri ayanamsa.
  2. Split each sign into nine. Each navamsa is 3°20′. Counting from Mesha, the 108 navamsas of the zodiac run through the 12 signs in turn, so a planet’s navamsa sign follows from its longitude. Put simply: in a movable sign (Mesha, Karka, Tula, Makara) the first navamsa is the sign itself, in a fixed sign it is the 9th sign from it, and in a dual sign the 5th.
  3. Place the houses. The lagna’s navamsa sign becomes the 1st house of the D9, and the other houses follow sign by sign.
  4. Mark vargottama. A planet in the same sign in both charts is vargottama.

Worked example

Born on 11/02/2000, 17:10 IST, Delhi, the same birth as the Kundli example: lagna Karka 16°43′, which is navamsa 6 of 9, so the navamsa lagna is Dhanu.

Reading the Navamsa

The navamsa is never read alone. Astrologers look at whether a planet that looks strong in the birth chart keeps that strength in the navamsa, at the 7th house and its lord in the D9 for marriage, and at Venus and Jupiter as the significators of the spouse. For matching, the guna milan in Kundli matching comes first; the navamsa charts of both partners are read after it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Navamsa chart?

The ninth divisional chart (D9). Each sign is split into nine parts of 3°20′ and each planet is placed in the sign of its part. It is read with the birth chart for marriage, the spouse and the real strength of each planet.

What is vargottama?

A planet (or the lagna) in the same sign in the birth chart and the navamsa. It is traditionally taken as a mark of strength.

How exact must the birth time be?

The navamsa lagna changes about every 13 minutes, much faster than the birth lagna, so it needs an accurate time. The calculator warns you when your lagna is close to a change.

Is the Navamsa used in Kundli matching?

The guna milan uses the Moon's nakshatra, not the navamsa. Many astrologers then read both partners' navamsa charts for a fuller view of the marriage.
