Sleeping direction as per Vastu: which way your head should point
As per Vastu, the best sleeping direction is with your head towards the south. East is the other good choice and is often suggested for students and children. Sleeping with your head to the north is traditionally avoided, and the north-east with it.
Here the direction always means where your head points when you lie down. So "south" means the headboard is against the south wall and your feet point north. Below you will find every direction with its verdict, the reasons behind the main ones, where the bed should go, advice for couples, children and guests, and what to do when the room allows only one awkward position.
Head directions at a glance
This table follows what most Vastu texts and consultants give. "Good" is the traditional first choice, "acceptable" is fine in practice, and "avoided" is what tradition asks you to steer clear of.
| Head points to | Verdict | What tradition says |
|---|---|---|
| South | Good | The direction most texts recommend for deep and restful sleep |
| South-west | Good | Close to south; good when the bed sits along the south-west |
| East | Good | Good for students and clarity of mind; often suggested for children |
| South-east | Acceptable | Close to south |
| West | Acceptable | Some traditions consider it neutral |
| North-west | Acceptable | Some avoid it as it is close to north |
| North | Avoided | Said to disturb rest |
| North-east | Avoided | Avoided, like north |
Why the south is preferred
The south is the zone of Yama and Mars, and Vastu links it with rest and stability. Lying with the head to the south means the body lines up with the heavy, steady side of the home, which is why tradition calls it the direction for deep, settled sleep.
It also fits the rest of a Vastu plan: the master bedroom is placed in the south-west, and a headboard on its south wall puts the head of the family in the steadiest part of the home.
Why sleeping with the head to the north is avoided
Vastu texts and family custom across India treat the head to the north as the one position to avoid in daily sleep, and the north-east with it. In tradition it is simply said to disturb rest, and many families pass the rule down without further explanation.
A popular modern explanation links it to the earth’s magnetic field. It is repeated often, but it is a belief rather than an established fact, so we present the rule as tradition. If north is the only head position your room allows, see the last section.
East for students and children
East is the direction of the rising Sun, and tradition links it with clarity, learning and fresh starts. That is why many consultants suggest an east head direction for students preparing for exams and for younger children. South works for them too; east is simply the one most often named for study years.
Where the bed goes in the room
Getting the head direction right is half of it. Where the bed stands in the room matters as well, and these points come up in almost every consultation:
- In the master bedroom, the bed is commonly placed in the south-west part of the room with the headboard on the south wall
- Keep a solid headboard against a solid wall, not against a window
- Avoid sleeping directly under a beam; if you cannot move the bed, a false ceiling or fabric canopy is a common fix
- Do not place the bed so your feet point straight out of the door
- Leave space on both sides so the bed is not pushed into a corner
- Avoid a headboard on a wall shared with a toilet
- Keep the north-east corner of the bedroom light rather than putting the bed there
For couples, children, guests and elders
Couples are usually advised to sleep with heads to the south on one shared mattress rather than two separate ones pushed together. Children do well with the head to the east or south, in a bedroom in the west, north-west or east of the home. Guests sleep in a north-west room where possible, with the head to the south or east; west is fine for a short stay. Elders in the family are commonly given a south-west or south room with the head to the south.
When the room only allows a north head position, turn the bed to the west or east instead, even if it means moving a wardrobe. If even that is not possible, keep the room calm, clutter-free and well aired.

House Vastu CalculatorDo
- Sleep with your head to the south where the room allows
- Use east for students and younger children if south is awkward
- Keep a solid headboard against a solid wall
- Place the master bed in the south-west part of the room
- Leave space on both sides of the bed
- Keep the bedroom calm, dim and uncluttered at night
Avoid
- Do not sleep with your head to the north or north-east
- Do not sleep directly under a beam if you can avoid it
- Do not point your feet straight out of the bedroom door
- Do not put the headboard on a wall shared with a toilet
- Do not push the bed tight into a corner
- Do not keep a mirror facing the bed
Adjustments without rebuilding
- If the bed must stay with its head to the north, many consultants suggest rotating it to the west or east instead
- Under a beam that cannot be avoided, a false ceiling or fabric canopy over the bed is commonly suggested
- A solid, high headboard is commonly suggested when the bed has to stand against a window
- If the feet point at the door, a low bench or footboard at the end of the bed is often suggested as a buffer
These are traditional practices that many families follow. They vary between Vastu schools; for your own home, a consultant can say which matter most.
Questions
What is the best sleeping direction as per Vastu?
Head to the south is the traditional first choice. East is also good and is often suggested for students. South-west is good too when the bed sits along that side.
Why should we not sleep with the head to the north?
Vastu texts and family custom list north as the head direction to avoid, and say it disturbs rest. A popular explanation links it to the earth’s magnetic field, but that is a belief rather than an established fact.
Is it okay to sleep with the head to the west?
Yes. West is treated as acceptable or neutral in most traditions. It is a reasonable choice when south and east are not possible.
Which direction should students sleep in?
East is the direction most often suggested for students, as tradition links it with clarity and learning. South is also fine.
Does the direction mean where my head points or where I face?
Where your head points. Sleeping in the south direction means the headboard is against the south wall and your feet point to the north.
Where should the bed be placed in a rented room?
Put the headboard on the south wall if you can, or the east wall, against a solid wall and not under a beam. Avoid pointing your feet straight at the door.
