Tithi times are IST and hold for all of India. The day of the vrat and the time shown are worked out for sunrise, sunset and moonrise in Nagpur. Computed from the Sun and Moon’s positions (sidereal, Lahiri); months are amanta, and a Krishna paksha vrat also shows the month North Indian (purnimanta) calendars give it.
How Vinayaka Chaturthi is commonly kept
- Many people fast for the day, or eat only fruit and milk, and some eat one meal after the puja.
- Ganesha puja at midday with durva grass, red flowers, modak and a lamp, at home or at a Ganesha temple.
- Reciting Ganesha prayers such as the Ganapati Atharvashirsha, or chanting "Om Gan Ganapataye Namah".
- On Ganesh Chaturthi (Bhadrapada) many families bring home a Ganesha idol, and traditionally the Moon is not looked at that night.
Fasting does not suit everyone. If you are pregnant, elderly, have diabetes, blood pressure or any other health condition, or take regular medicines, please check with your doctor before fasting. A lighter fast with fruit and milk, or simply a prayer, is also a common way to keep the day.
How the dates are worked out
Vinayaka Chaturthi is the Shukla paksha Chaturthi tithi: the Moon 36° to 48° ahead of the Sun. The begin and end times come from the Sun and Moon’s positions.
Madhyahna is the third fifth of the daytime at Nagpur, around noon. The vrat is on the day whose madhyahna Chaturthi covers; when it touches two days, the day it covers longer. The time in the table is the part of madhyahna in which Chaturthi is running.
Your family’s or temple’s panchang may follow a different rule or a different city; follow the one you trust.

The line at the top of this page shows the next Vinayaka Chaturthi, and the tables list every one of this year and next with the midday puja time and the Chaturthi times. The current or next one is highlighted.
What is the puja time on Vinayaka Chaturthi?
Madhyahna, the middle of the day: the table gives it for Nagpur, cut to the hours in which Chaturthi is running. In another city it moves by a few minutes with sunrise and sunset.
Is Vinayaka Chaturthi the same as Ganesh Chaturthi?
Ganesh Chaturthi is the Vinayaka Chaturthi of Bhadrapada, the biggest of the year. The same Chaturthi in every other month is kept as a smaller monthly vrat.
How is it different from Sankashti Chaturthi?
Vinayaka Chaturthi is the Chaturthi of the waxing Moon with a midday puja; Sankashti is the Chaturthi of the waning Moon, kept until moonrise.
Why does another calendar show a different day?
When Chaturthi runs through the middle of two days, or a calendar is made for another city or follows another rule, it can give the other day. This page follows the common madhyahna rule for Nagpur.
