Rashi dates are not fixed
A rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born. The Moon passes through all twelve signs in about 27 days, so the same birthday falls in a different rashi from year to year. The month ranges printed beside the signs (such as 20 January to 18 February for Aquarius) belong to the Western sun sign, not to the rashi: see the 12 zodiac signs with dates.
The signs are counted in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, as in Indian panchangs. Each rashi holds nine nakshatra padas, which is where the name letters come from: see the 27 nakshatras.

What is a rashi?
In Vedic astrology your rashi (janma rashi) is the sign the Moon was in at your birth. It is used for the rashifal, Kundli matching, sade sati and the first letter of a baby’s name.
Do rashis have fixed dates like sun signs?
No. The Moon moves through all 12 signs in about 27 days and stays in each for about two and a quarter days, so the rashi depends on the date and time of birth. The dates often printed next to the signs are for the Western sun sign.
Is my rashi the same as my zodiac sign?
Usually not. The rashi is the Moon’s sign in the sidereal zodiac; the Western zodiac sign is the Sun’s sign in the tropical zodiac. Check both with the rashi calculator and the zodiac sign calculator.
