How the property Vastu score is worked out
- How it feels and its history: a calm, bright place scores best; a known untimely death or long dispute, or earlier occupants who ran into illness, quarrels or debt, is marked to look at. Answer “do not know” and the question is left out.
- Door, kitchen, stairs and water: scored from the same placements as the house Vastu calculator: door in the north, north-east or east, kitchen in the south-east, stairs in the south or west turning clockwise, water below ground in the north-east.
- The south-west corner: the heaviest, most closed part of the home or office. A master bedroom, the owner’s cabin, storage or the stairs suit it; a toilet, an entrance, the kitchen or an underground tank are avoided there.
- Surroundings: open and lower to the north and east, higher to the south and west, and no road, tower or transformer pointing at the door.
- Score: each answer gives 10 points if it is the traditional best, 5 if acceptable and 0 if avoided.

A second-hand flat that feels bright, with no known history, earlier owners who did well, a north-east door, a south-east kitchen, the master bedroom in the south-west, no staircase inside, and a sump in the north-west of the building:

Frequently asked questions
What should I check for Vastu before buying a flat?
The main door, the kitchen, what sits in the south-west, where the stairs and the water tank are, and what surrounds the building. Many consultants also ask how the earlier occupants fared and how the place feels when you walk through it.
Why does the calculator ask about the earlier occupants?
Asking how the people who lived or worked there before got on is a traditional part of judging a property. It is a hint, not a rule, so you can answer “do not know” and the question is left out of the score.
Is a flat with a south-west door always a bad buy?
Not always. A south-west entrance is traditionally avoided, but the rest of the layout matters too, and many consultants suggest adjustments. A full check of the plan says how much it matters for your family.
How is the score worked out?
Each answer is compared with the placement most Vastu texts give: the traditional best scores 10 points, an acceptable answer 5 and an avoided one 0. The percentage is your total out of the maximum for the questions you answered.
