How the plot Vastu score is worked out
- Facing and roads: north, east and north-east are preferred; a road running straight into the plot (veedhi shoola) is avoided.
- Slope and height: the land should slope down towards the north, east or north-east, with the south and west higher.
- Shape: square or rectangular, with a north-east extension welcomed and other extensions or cut corners avoided.
- Open space, surroundings and soil: more open space in the north and east, water to the north-east, hills or tall buildings to the south-west, and firm soil.
- Score: each answer gives 10 points if it is the traditional best, 5 if acceptable and 0 if avoided.

Before you buy
Visit the plot with a compass, look at the slope after rain if you can, and check what will be built around it. Many issues of a plot can be balanced by where the house stands on it and how it is planned. See plot Vastu and Vastu for building a house, and pick a good date to start.
Frequently asked questions
Which facing plot is best as per Vastu?
North, east and north-east facing plots are the traditional first choice. West and south facing plots are not bad in themselves: with the house placed and planned correctly, many are very good homes.
Which way should the land slope?
Down towards the north, east or north-east, so that water flows that way, with the south and west a little higher.
What plot shapes are preferred?
Square and rectangular plots, with a length up to about twice the width. A north-east extension is welcomed; extensions in other corners, cut corners and triangular or irregular plots are traditionally avoided.
How is the score worked out?
Each answer is compared with the placement most Vastu texts give: the traditional best direction scores 10 points, an acceptable one 5 and an avoided one 0. The percentage is your total out of the maximum for the questions you answered.
