How your Kundli is made

1. Find the moment of birth in universal time, from the date, time and the time zone of the place of birth.
2. Place the planets. The Sun, Moon and planets come from the astronomy-engine library; Rahu is the mean lunar node and Ketu is opposite it. All are converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa.
3. Find the lagna, the sign rising at the place of birth, from the local sidereal time. See the lagna calculator for the details.
4. Draw the houses. The lagna’s sign is the 1st house and each next sign the next house, as in the North Indian chart.

How to read the North Indian chart

The top diamond is the 1st house (the lagna), and the houses run anticlockwise. The number in each house is its sign: 1 Mesha, 2 Vrishabha, 3 Mithuna, 4 Karka, 5 Simha, 6 Kanya, 7 Tula, 8 Vrishchika, 9 Dhanu, 10 Makara, 11 Kumbha, 12 Meena. The letters are the grahas: Su Sun, Mo Moon, Ma Mars, Me Mercury, Ju Jupiter, Ve Venus, Sa Saturn, Ra Rahu and Ke Ketu.

The 12 houses describe areas of life: the 1st yourself, the 2nd family and money, the 4th home, the 5th children and studies, the 7th marriage, the 10th career, the 11th gains and the 12th expenses. A planet’s effect depends on its sign, its house and the houses it rules, and the dasha tells you when each planet’s results come forward.
