Pitra dosh: what it is, how to check it and the remedies
Pitra (or pitru) dosh links the chart to the ancestors: the Sun, the 9th house and its lord, touched by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn. See which of the commonly cited combinations appear in your chart, and the simple practices people follow.
Check pitra dosh in your Kundli
Enter your date, time and place of birth. The checker draws your chart with the same engine as the Kundli calculator and tests each combination in the table below. The house-based ones need the birth time.
What is pitra dosh?
Pitra means the ancestors. In Jyotish the Sun stands for the father and the 9th house for the father, the ancestors and fortune, so when these are touched by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn, many astrologers call it pitra dosh.
The idea is commonly read as unfinished duties towards the family line: respect, remembrance and care that a family is asked to keep up. It is not a judgement on you or your ancestors, and it does not decide your life.
Traditions do not agree on one rule. Some look only at the Sun with Rahu; others add the 9th house and its lord, or the Moon. The checker below shows each combination separately, with the planets and houses, so you can see exactly what was found.
Pitra dosh is not one fixed rule in the classical texts. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra links the Sun and the 5th house with the father's line; the lists used today, built round the Sun, the 9th house and Rahu, are a later practice that astrologers apply in different ways.
The combinations commonly cited
These are the combinations most often quoted. The checker tests each one as written here.
| Combination | The rule | Needs the birth time |
|---|---|---|
| Sun with Rahu | The Sun and Rahu in the same sign (also called grahan yoga). | No |
| Sun with Ketu | The Sun and Ketu in the same sign. | No |
| Moon with Rahu or Ketu | The Moon with Rahu or Ketu. Some astrologers read this under the mother's side rather than pitra dosh. | No |
| Sun afflicted by Saturn | Saturn with the Sun, or aspecting it (Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th sign from itself). | No |
| Rahu or Ketu in the 9th house | Rahu or Ketu in the 9th house, the house of father, ancestors and fortune. | Yes |
| Saturn in the 9th house | Saturn in the 9th house. Fewer lists cite this one, and Saturn in the 9th is read well for some lagnas, so it is weighed with the rest of the chart. | Yes |
| 9th lord with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn | The lord of the 9th house in the same sign as Rahu, Ketu or Saturn. | Yes |
| 9th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th house | The lord of the 9th house placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house. | Yes |
These are the combinations most often quoted for pitra dosh. Traditions differ, many charts show at least one of them, and one combination on its own is not read as pitra dosh by most astrologers. It is a pointer to look at the 9th house and the Sun more closely, nothing to fear.
Worked example
Birth on 11/02/2000 at 17:10 IST in Delhi (the chart our Kundli calculator uses as its example): Karka lagna, Sun in Makara in the 7th house. The checker finds 3 of the 8 combinations:
- Sun with Ketu: Sun and Ketu are together in Makara, the 7th house.
- Sun afflicted by Saturn: Saturn in Mesha aspects Sun in Makara.
- 9th lord with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn: The 9th lord, Jupiter, is with Saturn in Mesha.
Three combinations in one chart is common, which is why one line is never read alone: the reading weighs the strength of the Sun, the 9th lord and Jupiter, and the dasha.
Remedies commonly suggested for pitra dosh
These are simple practices of remembrance and giving, done at home or nearby, with the family. They are offered as tradition suggests them, not as a promise of any result.
- Shraddha and tarpan for the ancestors during Pitru Paksha, on the tithi on which each ancestor passed away, or on Sarva Pitru Amavasya when the tithi is not known.
- Offering water with black sesame (til) to the ancestors on Amavasya, facing south.
- Feeding those in need, and feeding cows, crows and dogs, especially on Amavasya and during Pitru Paksha.
- Charity in the ancestors' name: food, clothes or help with someone's education or care.
- Watering a peepal tree, commonly on Saturdays or Amavasya.
- Respect and care for parents and elders while they are with us, which every tradition puts first.
If a parent is alive, many families put their care first. If you are unsure which practice fits your family's custom, follow the custom of your elders.
Pitru Paksha dates
Pitru Paksha is the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada in the amanta calendar (Ashwin in the purnimanta calendar of North India), the 15 or 16 days from Bhadrapada Purnima to Sarva Pitru Amavasya, when shraddha and tarpan are done for the ancestors. Dates below are the days on which each tithi is running at sunrise in Nagpur.
| Year | Begins (Purnima shraddha) | Ends (Sarva Pitru Amavasya) |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | ||
| 2027 |
Many calendars count Pitru Paksha from Pratipada, the day after the Purnima shraddha; the last day is Sarva Pitru Amavasya either way. Shraddha for a tithi is commonly done in the afternoon (aparahna), so on a few days the shraddha date can differ from the sunrise date. Check your local panchang or ask your family priest for the exact day.

Questions about pitra dosh
What is pitra dosh in simple words?
A set of chart combinations in which the Sun, the 9th house or its lord is touched by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn. It is commonly read as duties of remembrance and care towards the family line.
How do I know if I have pitra dosh?
Enter your birth details in the checker on this page. It lists which of the commonly cited combinations appear in your chart. One combination alone is not read as pitra dosh by most astrologers; Namieta reads the 9th house, the Sun and the dasha together.
What are the remedies for pitra dosh?
The ones most commonly suggested are shraddha and tarpan during Pitru Paksha, water with black sesame on Amavasya, feeding people in need and animals, charity in the ancestors' name, and care for parents and elders.
Should I be afraid of pitra dosh?
No. It is a name for a pattern in the chart, read as a reminder of family duties. It does not decide your life, and many charts show one of its combinations.
When is Pitru Paksha?
In the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada (amanta), the same fortnight that purnimanta calendars call Ashwin, usually in September or early October. The table on this page gives this year's and next year's dates.
Can pitra dosh be checked without the birth time?
Partly. The Sun and Moon with Rahu or Ketu and Saturn's link with the Sun need only the date. The 9th house combinations need the lagna, which needs the time of birth.
