Tithi times are IST and hold for all of India. The day of the vrat and the time shown are worked out for sunrise, sunset and moonrise in Nagpur. Computed from the Sun and Moon’s positions (sidereal, Lahiri); months are amanta, and a Krishna paksha vrat also shows the month North Indian (purnimanta) calendars give it.
How Masik Durgashtami is commonly kept
- Many people fast for the day, with fruit and milk, and eat after the evening puja.
- Durga puja at home or at a Devi temple, with red flowers, a lamp and an offering of food, and reading the Durga Saptashati or the Durga Chalisa.
- On the Navratri Ashtami many families do kanya pujan, inviting young girls for a meal.
Fasting does not suit everyone. If you are pregnant, elderly, have diabetes, blood pressure or any other health condition, or take regular medicines, please check with your doctor before fasting. A lighter fast with fruit and milk, or simply a prayer, is also a common way to keep the day.
How the dates are worked out
Durgashtami is the Shukla paksha Ashtami tithi: the Moon 84° to 96° ahead of the Sun. The begin and end times come from the Sun and Moon’s positions.
The vrat is on the day Ashtami is running at sunrise in Nagpur (udaya tithi). When it is running at two sunrises, the first is taken; when at none, the day it begins.
For the Navratri Ashtami some panchangs add further rules, for example avoiding an Ashtami joined with Saptami, so check your family’s panchang for the puja muhurat.
Your family’s or temple’s panchang may follow a different rule or a different city; follow the one you trust.
