Atmakaraka and Darakaraka calculator

The Jaimini chara karakas (चर कारक) from your date, time and place of birth: the seven planets ranked by their degree within the sign, from the Atmakaraka (highest degree, the self) to the Darakaraka (lowest degree, the spouse and partnerships), with the Karakamsa and a check of how exact your birth time must be. How the karakas are calculated

  1. Make the birth chart. The planets are placed as in the Janam Kundli: sidereal positions with the Lahiri ayanamsa.
  2. Take each planet’s degree within its sign. The sign itself does not matter, only how far the planet has moved through it, from 0° to 30°. The seven planets from the Sun to Saturn take part; Rahu and Ketu do not in the 7-karaka scheme used here.
  3. Rank them from the highest degree to the lowest. The highest is the Atmakaraka (AK), then the Amatyakaraka (AmK), Bhratrikaraka (BK), Matrikaraka (MK), Putrakaraka (PK), Gnatikaraka (GK), and the lowest is the Darakaraka (DK).
  4. Find the Karakamsa. The navamsa sign of the Atmakaraka, as in the Navamsa chart, is the Karakamsa.
  5. Check the close calls. When two neighbours are only a few minutes of arc apart, the calculator works out from each planet’s speed how far the birth time would have to move for them to swap.

Some astrologers use 8 karakas instead: Rahu joins, with its degree counted backwards (30° minus its degree, since it moves backwards), and a Pitrikaraka for the father comes between the Matrikaraka and the Putrakaraka. Both schemes are found in the classical texts (the Jaimini Sutras and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra); the 7-karaka scheme is the one most widely used today. The two schemes can give different karakas for the same chart, so the result names the scheme it used.

Worked example

Born on 11/02/2000, 17:10 IST, Delhi, the same birth as the Kundli example. The seven planets ranked by their degree within the sign, highest first:

RankGrahaSign and degreeKaraka
1SunMakara 28°11′Atmakaraka (AK)
2VenusDhanu 27°51′Amatyakaraka (AmK)
3SaturnMesha 17°16′Bhratrikaraka (BK)
4MercuryKumbha 15°39′Matrikaraka (MK)
5MoonMesha 9°09′Putrakaraka (PK)
6MarsMeena 5°42′Gnatikaraka (GK)
7JupiterMesha 5°35′Darakaraka (DK)

The Atmakaraka is the Sun (Makara 28°11′) and the Darakaraka is Jupiter (Mesha 5°35′). The Atmakaraka is in navamsa 9 of 9 of its sign, which falls in Kanya, so the Karakamsa is Kanya.

Mars and Jupiter are only 7.1′ apart, but they would swap only if the birth time were about 4 h 41 min earlier, so the order is safe.

Computed at build time by the same engine as the calculator above.

The Atmakaraka and Darakaraka by planet

These are the readings commonly given in Jaimini astrology. They describe themes, not events: the same planet reads differently by sign, house, navamsa and dasha, so take each line as a starting point for a reading, not a verdict.

PlanetAs AtmakarakaAs Darakaraka
SunCommonly read as a soul learning about ego, authority and self-respect, and to lead without pride.Commonly read as a partner with a strong sense of self and dignity, and a bond where respect matters.
MoonCommonly read as a soul learning through feelings, care for others and steadiness of mind.Commonly read as a caring, sensitive partner, and a bond that needs emotional closeness.
MarsCommonly read as a soul learning to use courage and drive well, and to hold back anger.Commonly read as an active, direct partner, and a bond that does well when energy is shared, not turned on each other.
MercuryCommonly read as a soul learning through speech, study and trade, and to keep words honest.Commonly read as a youthful, talkative partner, and a bond built on conversation and shared interests.
JupiterCommonly read as a soul learning through teaching, faith and guidance, and to respect teachers.Commonly read as a wise or principled partner, and a bond that grows through shared values.
VenusCommonly read as a soul learning about love, comfort and beauty, and to keep desires in balance.Commonly read as a warm, artistic partner, and a bond where affection and comfort matter.
SaturnCommonly read as a soul learning through patience, hard work and duty, often with results that come slowly.Commonly read as a mature, responsible partner, and a bond that grows steadily with time and effort.

The Darakaraka is read for partnership together with the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the navamsa; see the marriage prediction calculator for those indicators. No single karaka tells you who or when you will marry.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Atmakaraka?

In Jaimini astrology, the planet with the highest degree within its sign (from the Sun to Saturn). It is read as the significator of the self and the main lesson of this life.

What is the Darakaraka?

The planet with the lowest degree within its sign. It is read as the significator of the spouse and close partnerships, always together with the 7th house, Venus and the navamsa.

Does the Darakaraka tell me who I will marry?

No. It shows traits commonly linked with partnership in your chart, not a person, a date or an outcome. One planet never decides a marriage on its own.

Why 7 karakas and not 8?

Both schemes are taught. This calculator uses 7 (the Sun to Saturn). The 8-karaka scheme adds Rahu, counting its degree backwards, and can shift the karakas, so the page names the scheme used.

How exact must the birth time be?

Usually much less than for the lagna, because the karakas depend on the planets' degrees, not on the rising sign. The Moon moves fastest, so the calculator shows how far the time would have to move for two karakas to swap.

Is my information stored?

No. The karakas are calculated in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to or stored on this website.
