Lunar eclipse times are the umbral phase (when part of the Moon is in the Earth’s shadow); solar eclipse times are for the chosen city. Computed from the positions of the Sun and Moon with the astronomy-engine library; visibility needs the Moon or Sun above the horizon.

Sutak and what families do

Sutak begins about 9 hours before a lunar eclipse and 12 hours before a solar eclipse, and ends when the eclipse ends. It is observed only where the eclipse is seen.

  • Cooking and eating are usually avoided from the start of sutak until the eclipse ends; children, the elderly, the unwell and pregnant women are commonly exempted for most of the sutak.
  • Temples close their doors during sutak and open after the eclipse with cleaning and worship.
  • Many people chant, pray or meditate during the eclipse, and bathe and give charity after it ends.
  • Tulsi leaves are commonly placed in stored food and water before sutak begins.
  • Pregnant women are traditionally asked to stay indoors during the eclipse.

For the day’s tithi and nakshatra see the panchang; for how an eclipse touches your own chart, the Kundli and your rashi.

Questions about grahan

How many eclipses are there in 2026?

4: 2 lunar and 2 solar. The table shows which of them can be seen from your city.

What is sutak?

A period before an eclipse when cooking, eating and worship in temples are traditionally avoided: about 9 hours before a lunar eclipse and 12 hours before a solar eclipse begins. It is observed only where the eclipse is seen.

Is sutak observed if the eclipse is not seen in India?

Traditionally no. Sutak and the eclipse rules apply where the eclipse is visible, which is why the table checks visibility for your city.

Why does the time differ between cities?

A lunar eclipse happens at the same moment everywhere, but the Moon may not have risen yet in some cities. A solar eclipse differs by place: its start, end and how much of the Sun is covered change across India.

What is a penumbral (upchhaya) lunar eclipse?

The Moon passes only through the Earth’s faint outer shadow, so it dims slightly. Most panchangs do not treat it as a grahan, and no sutak is observed.

Can I look at a solar eclipse?

Never with the naked eye or ordinary sunglasses. Use certified eclipse glasses or watch a projection; the Sun can damage the eyes even when most of it is covered.
