Ekadashi 2026 and 2027: dates, names and parana time

Ekadashi is the 11th tithi of each half of the lunar month, so it comes twice a month: once as the Moon grows (Shukla paksha) and once as it wanes (Krishna paksha). It is kept as a day of fasting and prayer to Vishnu, and each of the 24 Ekadashis of a usual year has its own name (26 in a year with an adhik month). Here is every Ekadashi of 2026 and 2027, with the day to fast and the time to break the fast.

Next Ekadashi: Rama Ekadashi, Thursday, 5 Nov 2026. Parana: Fri 6 Nov, 6:18 am to 10:32 am.

Tithi times are IST and hold for all of India. The fast day and the parana are worked out for sunrise and sunset in Nagpur. Computed from the Sun and Moon’s positions (sidereal, Lahiri); months are amanta, and a Krishna paksha Ekadashi also shows the month North Indian (purnimanta) calendars give it.

How the Ekadashi fast is commonly kept

  • Many people fast from sunrise on Ekadashi until the parana time the next morning. Some keep a full fast; many take water, fruit and milk (phalahar).
  • Rice, other grains and beans are commonly left out on Ekadashi, even by people who do not fast.
  • Prayer to Vishnu at home or at a temple, reading the Ekadashi katha of that month, and chanting the Vishnu Sahasranama.
  • On some Ekadashis, such as Devshayani (Ashadhi) and Devuthani, families keep a night of bhajans or visit Vitthal and Vishnu temples.
  • The fast is broken on Dwadashi within the parana time, usually with a simple meal, and food or other charity is given.

Fasting does not suit everyone. If you are pregnant, elderly, have diabetes, blood pressure or any other health condition, or take regular medicines, please check with your doctor before fasting. A lighter phalahar fast, or simply leaving out grains, is also a common way to keep the day.

How the dates and parana are worked out

Each Ekadashi is the tithi in which the Moon moves from 120° to 132° ahead of the Sun (Shukla paksha), or from 300° to 312° (Krishna paksha). Its begin and end times come from the Sun and Moon’s positions. The day of the fast follows the common household (Smarta) rule at Nagpur sunrise:

  • Ekadashi running at sunrise on one day: the fast is on that day. Running at two sunrises: on the second day.
  • When Dwadashi would end before the next sunrise, leaving no Dwadashi morning for the parana, the fast moves to the day before.
  • Ekadashi that touches no sunrise at all: the fast is on the day it begins.

The parana is on the next day: after sunrise, after Hari Vasara (the first quarter of Dwadashi) and before Dwadashi ends. The table closes the window at sunset when Dwadashi runs longer. Your family’s or temple’s panchang may follow a different rule, especially in Vaishnava and ISKCON tradition; follow the one you trust.

See today’s tithi and the full panchang, and the Amavasya and Purnima dates.

Questions about Ekadashi

Ekadashi kab hai?

The line at the top of this page shows the next Ekadashi, and the tables list every Ekadashi of this year and next with the fast day, the tithi times and the parana time. The current or next one is highlighted.

Why does another calendar show a different day?

An Ekadashi tithi rarely matches the clock day. This page gives the day kept by households (the Smarta day) at Nagpur sunrise. When the tithi begins after sunrise and ends before the next one, or when Dwadashi ends before the next sunrise, many Vaishnava and ISKCON calendars keep the fast one day later; the table notes those days.

What is parana and when should I break the fast?

Parana is breaking the Ekadashi fast on the next day, Dwadashi. It is done after sunrise, after Hari Vasara and before Dwadashi ends. The window in the table is worked out for Nagpur sunrise; most people break the fast in the morning part of it.

What is Hari Vasara?

The first quarter of the Dwadashi tithi. The fast is commonly not broken during it, so when Hari Vasara runs past sunrise, the parana starts later in the day.

Do the times hold for all of India?

The tithi begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, so those IST times hold for all of India. The fast day and the parana depend on sunrise, so in a city far from Nagpur the parana can start a little earlier or later, and on rare days the fast day can differ.

Is a fast without water necessary?

No. Families keep Ekadashi in many ways: a full fast, a fast with water, phalahar, or simply leaving out grains. Anyone with a health condition, and anyone pregnant or elderly, should check with a doctor before fasting.
