How the lagna is calculated
- Convert the birth time to universal time, using the time zone of the place of birth on that date.
- Find the local sidereal time: how far the Earth has turned against the stars at that moment and longitude.
- Find the rising degree: from the sidereal time, the latitude and the tilt of the Earth’s axis, the point of the zodiac on the eastern horizon. This is the ascendant in the Western (tropical) zodiac.
- Subtract the ayanamsa. Taking off the Lahiri ayanamsa gives the sidereal lagna used in Indian astrology.
- Count the houses. The lagna’s sign is the 1st house; each next sign is the next house (whole-sign houses). What each house stands for is in the 12 houses of a Kundli.

Frequently asked questions
What is lagna?
Lagna (लग्न), the ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. It is the 1st house of your Kundli, and the other houses follow from it.
Why does the lagna need the time and place?
The Earth turns once a day, so all 12 signs rise in turn: each one for roughly 1½ to 2½ hours. The time decides which sign was rising, and the place decides when it rose there. A wrong time by 10 to 20 minutes can change the lagna near a change of sign.
Is lagna the same as rashi?
No. Your rashi is the sign the Moon was in; your lagna is the sign that was rising. Both are used: the lagna for the houses of the chart, the rashi for the daily rashifal, Kundli matching and sade sati.
Which method does this calculator use?
The Indian sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa and whole-sign houses, as in the North Indian chart. The rising degree comes from the local sidereal time at the place of birth.
