How the house Vastu score is worked out

1. Find north with a phone compass from the centre of the home (for a flat, the centre of the flat).
2. Place each room in one of the eight directions: north, north-east, east, south-east, south, south-west, west or north-west.
3. Compare with the traditional placements: the main entrance in the north, north-east or east, the kitchen in the south-east, the master bedroom in the south-west, the pooja room in the north-east, toilets in the north-west or west, and the staircase and heavy storage in the south and west.
4. Score: the traditional best direction gives 10 points, an acceptable one 5 and an avoided one 0. The percentage is the total out of the maximum for the rooms your home has.

Worked example

Here everything follows the common rules except the toilet in the north-east, the zone kept for prayer and clarity, which is the first thing a consultant would look at.

Reading your result

A high score means the main placements follow the common rules; it does not mean every detail is right. A low score is not a reason to panic or rebuild: most corrections are about how rooms are used and arranged.
