Bedroom Vastu: direction, bed position, mirrors and colours
As per Vastu, the master bedroom is best in the south-west of the home, the earth zone that gives the head of the family stability. Children’s bedrooms suit the west, north-west or east, and a guest room suits the north-west. The north-east and south-east are traditionally avoided for the master bedroom.
Master bedroom: the short answer
Best: South-west. Acceptable: South, West, North-west, North, East. Avoid: North-east, South-east. The south-west, the earth zone, gives the head of the family stability.
A bedroom is where you rest, so most Vastu advice for it is about calm: a steady bed position, soft colours, few electronics and no clutter. Below you will find the directions for each kind of bedroom, how to place the bed, where mirrors and the wardrobe go, which colours suit, and what to keep under the bed. Most of it works in a rented flat without any building work.
Which direction suits each bedroom
The south-west is kept for the head of the family. Children’s rooms are placed where there is movement and light, and guest rooms in the north-west, the air zone linked with people who come and go.
| Bedroom | Good | Acceptable | Traditionally avoided |
|---|---|---|---|
| Master bedroom | South-west | South, west, north-west, north, east | North-east, south-east |
| Children’s bedroom | West, north-west, east | North, south | South-east, south-west, north-east |
| Guest room | North-west | North, west, east, south, south-east | South-west, north-east |
Placing the bed
Within the room, the bed is commonly placed in the south-west part with the headboard on the south wall, so you sleep with your head to the south. East is the other good head direction, and north is traditionally avoided. Our guide to sleeping direction covers this in full.
Keep the headboard against a solid wall, leave space on both sides, and avoid sleeping under a beam or with your feet pointing straight out of the door. A wooden bed is the common choice; a bed with storage is fine if you follow the advice on what goes inside.
Mirrors, electronics and the wardrobe
The most common bedroom rule in Vastu is that no mirror should face the bed. A dressing table is usually placed on the north or east wall, and if a wardrobe mirror faces the bed, many families cover it at night with a curtain.
Keep electronics to a minimum. If there is a television or work desk, the south-east part of the room suits electrical things, as it is the fire zone. Charge phones away from the head of the bed. Heavy wardrobes go on the south-west, south or west walls, in line with heavy storage everywhere in a Vastu home, and keep the north-east of the room light.
Colours for bedrooms
For the master bedroom in the south-west, the traditional palette is peach, brown and earthy tones, with soft pink, beige and cream as common companions. For children’s rooms, light green, light blue and cream suit the west, north-west and east. Guest rooms in the north-west take white, cream and grey. Very dark walls and harsh, bright reds are commonly avoided in any bedroom.
What to keep under the bed
Space under the bed is commonly kept empty and clean. If you need storage, keep it to soft things like bedding, pillows and seasonal clothes. Most consultants suggest not keeping these under the bed:
- Broken items, scrap metal or old electronics
- Shoes and footwear
- Old papers and files you no longer need
- Iron tools, utensils or anything sharp
- Unwashed clothes or anything that gathers dust

- Do not fill the bedroom with screens and chargers near the bed
- Do not store broken things, shoes or scrap under the bed
- Do not sleep under a beam if the bed can be moved
Adjustments without rebuilding
- If the master bedroom is in the north-east, many consultants suggest using it for younger members and moving the couple to a south or west room
- Covering a mirror that faces the bed with a curtain at night is commonly suggested
- In a south-east bedroom, soft earthy colours and fewer electronics are commonly suggested to calm the fire zone
- A heavy wardrobe or bookcase on the south-west wall of the room is often suggested when the bedroom itself is in a lighter zone
These are traditional practices that many families follow. They vary between Vastu schools; for your own home, a consultant can say which matter most.
