Pythagorean numerology: the letter chart and your core numbers
Pythagorean numerology is the letter system of Western numerology. It numbers the alphabet in order from 1 to 9 and works out a few core numbers from your full name and your date of birth. Here is the chart, how each number is found, a worked example and how it compares with the Chaldean system used more in India.
What Pythagorean numerology is
Pythagorean numerology turns a name and a date of birth into a small set of numbers, each reduced to one digit from 1 to 9 or kept as a master number. The letters of the name are counted with a chart that numbers the alphabet in order, and the date is reduced by adding its digits. Each number is read for a different side of a person: the direction of your life, how you express yourself, what you want inside and how others first see you.
Where the name comes from
The system is named after Pythagoras, the Greek thinker of the sixth century BCE whose school taught that numbers lie behind the order of the world. None of his own writing survives, and he left no letter chart or list of core numbers. The method used today, with the A to Z chart and named numbers such as the life path and the soul urge, is largely a twentieth-century Western development. Calling it Pythagorean honours his idea of number, not a method that comes from him.
Pythagorean numerology chart (1 to 9)
The chart counts the alphabet in order from 1 to 9 and then starts again, so A is 1, I is 9, J is 1 again and Z is 8. Every number from 1 to 9 has at least two letters.
| Number | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A J S |
| 2 | B K T |
| 3 | C L U |
| 4 | D M V |
| 5 | E N W |
| 6 | F O X |
| 7 | G P Y |
| 8 | H Q Z |
| 9 | I R |
The vowels are A, E, I, O, U. Y is counted as a consonant by default, as the calculators on this site do; some numerologists count it as a vowel when it sounds like one, as in Mythili.
Both charts side by side, with a tool that gives the number of each letter of any name: numerology alphabet chart.
The core numbers and how each is found
A Pythagorean reading is built from six core numbers. Two come from the date of birth, three from the full name, and one joins the two. In every one, each piece is reduced first and the pieces are then added and reduced again.
| Number | Worked out from | Commonly read for | Read more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Life path | The date of birth: month, day and year each reduced, then added and reduced | The main direction of your life and the lessons along it | Life path calculator |
| Expression (destiny) | Every letter of the full name: each word reduced, then the words added and reduced | Your natural abilities and how you use them | Expression number |
| Soul urge (heart’s desire) | Only the vowels of the full name, added the same way | What you want inside and what moves you | Soul urge number |
| Personality | Only the consonants of the full name, added the same way | How other people see you at first | Name numerology calculator |
| Birthday | The day of the month you were born, reduced | A particular ability you were born with | Numerology chart |
| Maturity | The life path and the expression number added and reduced | What tends to come forward later in life | Maturity calculator |
Western books often call the expression number the destiny number. On this site the destiny number articles are about the Bhagyank, which comes from the date of birth, so the two are different numbers.
Master numbers 11, 22, 33
When a total reaches 11, 22, 33, the Pythagorean method stops there and keeps it as a master number instead of adding its digits again. The calculators on this site keep master numbers in the Pythagorean numbers; the Chaldean name number, the Mulank (Moolank) and the Bhagyank reduce them to one digit.
| Number | In a word | How it is read |
|---|---|---|
| 11 | The intuitive | Master number 11 adds strong intuition and the ability to inspire others. It is also read as 2 (1 + 1). |
| 22 | The master builder | Master number 22 combines vision with practical skill to build things that last. It is also read as 4 (2 + 2). |
| 33 | The master teacher | Master number 33 is about service, teaching and compassion. It is also read as 6 (3 + 3). |
Some numerologists also look at the totals on the way down: 13, 14, 16, 19 are read as karmic debt numbers. The karmic debt calculator looks for them in your life path, birthday and name numbers.
Worked example: Ananya Rao, born 14/08/1995
Ananya Rao is an example name, not a real person. Every number below is worked out by the same engine as the calculators on this site.
| Word | Letters and values | Total |
|---|---|---|
| ANANYA | A 1 + N 5 + A 1 + N 5 + Y 7 + A 1 | 20 → 2 |
| RAO | R 9 + A 1 + O 6 | 16 → 7 |
Vowels are shown in blue; the soul urge adds only these, the personality only the others.
Life path
1
Month 8, Day 14 → 5, Year 1995 → 24 → 6
8 + 5 + 6 = 19 → 10 → 1
Expression
9
ANANYA 20 → 2, RAO 16 → 7
2 + 7 = 9
Soul urge
1
ANANYA 3, RAO 7
3 + 7 = 10 → 1
Personality
8
ANANYA 17 → 8, RAO 9
8 + 9 = 17 → 8
Birthday
5
14 → 5
Maturity
1
1 + 9 = 10 → 1
Computed by the same engine as the calculators.
So Ananya Rao has life path 1 (the leader), expression 9 (the warrior), soul urge 1 (the leader) and personality 8 (the achiever). The short meanings of each number are in the table below.
The life path total passes through 19 on its way to 1, so the karmic debt calculator lists 19 among the karmic debt numbers for this date.
The life path and the Bhagyank are both 1 here. They come from the same date but are added differently (the life path reduces month, day and year first and keeps master numbers), so they often agree but not always.
For comparison, the Chaldean chart gives the same name the number 6 (24 → 6), and the date gives Mulank (Moolank) 5 and Bhagyank 1.
What the numbers 1 to 9 mean
Each core number is read with the same short meanings; a life path 3 and a soul urge 3 share the meaning of 3, applied to a different side of you. These are the meanings the calculators on this site use. Western books word them in their own way.
| Number | In a word | Keywords | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The leader | independent, ambitious, original | Number 1 people like to start things and take charge. They work best with freedom and a clear goal. |
| 2 | The peacemaker | sensitive, cooperative, intuitive | Number 2 people read moods well and do their best work in partnership. Harmony around them matters a lot. |
| 3 | The guide | wise, expressive, optimistic | Number 3 people learn quickly, explain well and are often looked to for advice. They grow through knowledge. |
| 4 | The builder | practical, disciplined, unconventional | Number 4 people are hard-working and methodical, and often see things differently from those around them. |
| 5 | The communicator | quick, adaptable, curious | Number 5 people are quick thinkers who enjoy variety, travel and trade. They adapt fast to change. |
| 6 | The nurturer | caring, artistic, responsible | Number 6 people value family, beauty and comfort. They take responsibility for others naturally. |
| 7 | The seeker | analytical, spiritual, reserved | Number 7 people look beneath the surface. They need quiet time and are drawn to research and spirituality. |
| 8 | The achiever | determined, patient, ambitious | Number 8 people work steadily toward long-term success. Results may come later, but they tend to last. |
| 9 | The warrior | energetic, courageous, generous | Number 9 people have energy, courage and a strong sense of fairness. They finish what they start. |
Pythagorean vs Chaldean numerology
Both systems turn letters into numbers, but they number the alphabet differently and add up a name differently. 16 of the 26 letters have a different value in the two charts; only 10 letters (A, B, C, D, E, J, K, L, M, N) have the same value in both.
| Point | Pythagorean | Chaldean |
|---|---|---|
| Letter values | 1 to 9, in alphabet order | 1 to 8, grouped by sound; no letter is 9 |
| How a name is added | Each word reduced, then the words added and reduced | All letters added into one compound total, then reduced |
| 11, 22 and 33 | Kept as master numbers | Reduced like any other total |
| Name numbers | Expression, soul urge and personality | One name number (Naamank), with the compound total also read |
| Date of birth | Life path and birthday number | In India usually read as Mulank (Moolank) and Bhagyank |
| Where it is common | Western numerology books and apps | Name numbers and name correction in India |

Which system do Indian numerologists use?
Many Indian numerologists use the Chaldean chart for the name number and read the date of birth through the Mulank (Moolank) and Bhagyank, often with the Lo Shu grid. Pythagorean numbers are more common in Western books and apps, and some Indian practitioners use them alongside. The calculators on this site lead with the Chaldean chart for names and show the Pythagorean expression, soul urge and personality numbers next to it as a second view.
Practitioners differ, so when you have a reading it is fair to ask which system the numbers come from, and to read each number with the method it comes from.

Pythagorean numerology: common questions
What is Pythagorean numerology?
It is the letter and number system of Western numerology. Letters are numbered 1 to 9 in alphabet order, and core numbers such as the life path, expression, soul urge and personality are worked out from your full name and date of birth. It is named after the Greek thinker Pythagoras, but the system as used today is largely a twentieth-century Western development.
How do I calculate my Pythagorean numbers?
For the life path, reduce the month, the day and the year of birth to one digit each, add them and reduce again. For the name numbers, give each letter its value from the chart, add and reduce each word, then add the word results and reduce: all letters for the expression, vowels for the soul urge, consonants for the personality. Totals of 11, 22, 33 are kept. The numerology chart calculator does all of this for you.
What is the Pythagorean numerology chart?
It numbers the alphabet in order from 1 to 9 and starts again: A is 1, B is 2, I is 9, J is 1 and so on to Z, which is 8. The full chart is near the top of this page.
Is Pythagorean or Chaldean numerology more accurate?
Neither can be shown to be more accurate; they are two traditions that give letters different values and add a name differently. What matters is to use one system consistently and to read each number with the method it comes from.
Is the expression number the same as the Bhagyank?
No. Western books often call the expression number the destiny number, but it comes from the letters of your name. The Bhagyank, which Indian numerology also calls the destiny number, comes from adding all the digits of your date of birth.
Should I use my full birth name or the name I use now?
Western numerology traditionally uses the full name given at birth for the core numbers, and many numerologists also look at the name you use now. If the two differ, check both and see what changes.
