Choghadiya for your city

How the choghadiya is calculated

Choghadiya (चौघड़िया) splits each day into 16 periods: 8 between sunrise and sunset, and 8 between sunset and the next sunrise. “Chau” means four and “ghadi” is a unit of 24 minutes, but on a day of equal day and night each choghadiya lasts 90 minutes (12 hours ÷ 8), just under four ghadis.

  1. Find the local sunrise and sunset. The calculator works these out for your city and date, so the times are right for your place and season.
  2. Divide the day into 8 equal parts, and the night (sunset to the next sunrise) into 8 more.
  3. Name each part. The day starts with the choghadiya of the weekday’s planet and follows the cycle Udveg, Chal, Labh, Amrit, Kaal, Shubh, Rog. The 8th period repeats the 1st. The night has its own order.

Amrit, Shubh and Labh are the periods families look for. Chal is neutral and suits travel. Udveg, Kaal and Rog are avoided for starting anything new.

Choghadiya, Rahu kaal and muhurat

Choghadiya is for everyday timing: setting out on a journey, a purchase, signing papers or opening the shop. Many families also avoid Rahu kaal, even when it falls inside a good choghadiya, and some match the task to the planet of the hora.

For a wedding, griha pravesh, a vehicle purchase or the opening of a business, a muhurat is chosen from the full panchang (vara, tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana) and the family’s charts. For dates that also suit your numbers, try the lucky date calculator, or ask Namieta for a muhurat.

Frequently asked questions

What is choghadiya?

A way of dividing the day into good and bad periods. The time from sunrise to sunset is cut into 8 equal parts, and the time from sunset to the next sunrise into 8 more. Each part is one of seven choghadiyas: Amrit, Shubh, Labh, Chal, Udveg, Kaal or Rog.

Which choghadiya is best?

Amrit, Shubh and Labh are good: Amrit for any good work, Shubh for ceremonies and worship, Labh for business and buying. Chal is neutral and suits travel. Udveg, Kaal and Rog are avoided for starting new work.

Why are the timings different in my city?

Choghadiya starts at the local sunrise, and sunrise changes with the place and the season. A choghadiya is about 90 minutes long only when day and night are equal; in summer the day periods are longer and the night periods shorter.

Does the day start at midnight or sunrise?

At sunrise. The night choghadiyas after midnight belong to the previous day, so before sunrise the calculator shows the period from the night before.

Is choghadiya enough for a wedding or griha pravesh?

No. Choghadiya is for everyday timing, such as starting a journey or a purchase. Big events need a muhurat from the full panchang (tithi, nakshatra, yoga) and the family’s charts, which Namieta can prepare.
