The directions of Vastu
How Vastu works
Vastu sees a building as a living space laid over the eight directions and the centre. Each direction is linked with a deity, a planet and one of the five elements (pancha bhuta): earth, water, fire, air and space. The north-east, the zone of water and prayer, is kept light, clean and open; the south-west, the zone of earth, is kept heavy and closed; fire belongs to the south-east and air to the north-west. The centre, the Brahmasthan, is left open.
The tradition speaks of four foundations: Bhoomi, the land; Prasad, the building; Yaana, vehicles; and Shayan, furniture and where you rest. Getting the land and the building right matters most, and arranging the furniture and the use of each room comes next. See Vastu directions for each direction in detail.

Questions about Vastu Shastra
What is Vastu Shastra?
The traditional Indian science of building and arranging spaces. It relates each direction to an element and a deity, and gives the placement of the entrance, rooms, water, fire and heavy weight so that a home supports the people in it. See what is Vastu Shastra.

How do I find the directions in my home?
