What each muhurat means
A muhurta is a unit of time of about 48 minutes: the day from sunrise to sunset has 15 of them, and so does the night. Panchangs mark some parts of the day as good for starting things and some as best avoided. The times on this page are the general ones for the whole day; they are not chosen for a particular person or event.
Brahma muhurta
The time before dawn, here from 96 to 48 minutes before sunrise. It is the 14th of the 15 muhurtas of the night, and is traditionally kept for prayer, meditation, japa and study, when the house is quiet. Some panchangs work it out from the length of the night instead of a fixed 48 minutes, which moves it by a few minutes.
Abhijit muhurat
The 8th of the 15 muhurtas of the day, the one around local noon. It is commonly used to begin an important task on a day when no other muhurat has been fixed. Many panchangs do not use it on Wednesdays; the page notes this on that day.
Good choghadiyas
The day and the night are each cut into 8 choghadiyas. Amrit is counted the best for all good work, Shubh for ceremonies, worship and marriage, Labh for business, buying and starting studies, and Chal (Char) is neutral and used for travel. The order changes with the weekday; see the choghadiya today page for all 16 with their notes.
Rahu kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika
Three eighths of the day, a different one for each weekday, that are commonly avoided for new starts, journeys and purchases. Work already under way carries on as usual. The Rahu kaal page gives them for the next 7 days.
Tithi, nakshatra and yoga
The three limbs of the panchang that say most about the day as a whole. The table gives the one running at sunrise, the time it ends and the one that follows. A few yogas, such as Vyatipata and Vaidhriti, are commonly avoided for new work and are marked.
How the times are worked out
Sunrise and sunset are computed for the chosen city with the astronomy-engine library (the upper edge of the Sun on the horizon, with refraction), the convention printed panchangs use. Everything else is counted from them. In Nagpur on Sunday 11 October 2026:
- Sunrise was at 6:08 am and sunset at 5:53 pm, a day of 11 h 45 min.
- Brahma muhurta: 96 to 48 minutes before 6:08 am, so 4:32 am to 5:20 am.
- Abhijit muhurat: the day divided by 15 gives muhurtas of 0 h 47 min; the 8th runs from 11:37 am to 12:24 pm.
- Rahu kaal: on a Sunday the 8th eighth of the day, 4:25 pm to 5:53 pm.
Times are rounded to the minute. Other panchangs can differ by a minute or two depending on how they define sunrise.

Questions about shubh muhurat
What is the shubh muhurat today?
The box at the top lists today’s good times for the city you pick: Brahma muhurta before sunrise, Abhijit muhurat around midday, and the Amrit, Shubh, Labh and Chal choghadiyas of the day and night. The table under it also gives Rahu kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika, which are commonly avoided.
What time is Brahma muhurta today?
It is taken here as the time from 96 to 48 minutes before sunrise, so it moves with the sunrise of your city. In Nagpur on 11 October 2026, with sunrise at 6:08 am, it ran from 4:32 am to 5:20 am.
How is Abhijit muhurat calculated?
The time from sunrise to sunset is cut into 15 equal muhurtas, and Abhijit is the 8th, the one around local noon. It lasts about 48 minutes, a little more in summer and a little less in winter. Many panchangs do not use it on Wednesdays; the page says so on that day.
Which choghadiya is good today?
Amrit, Shubh and Labh are counted as good, and Chal (also written Char) as neutral and fine for travel. Udveg, Kaal and Rog are commonly avoided for new work. The full list of the 16 choghadiyas of the day and night is on the choghadiya page.
Why are the times different in my city?
Every muhurat here is counted from sunrise and sunset, and those change with longitude and latitude. Cities in the east of India see the Sun rise earlier than cities in the west, about 4 minutes for each degree of longitude, so pick your city or use your location.
Is a good choghadiya enough for a wedding or griha pravesh?
Usually not. The times on this page are the general good hours of the day. For a wedding, griha pravesh, mundan or a new business, a muhurat is chosen for that event, from the tithi, nakshatra, lagna and the charts of the people involved. The vivah muhurat and griha pravesh muhurat pages list the dates the panchang allows.
