Hora for your city

How the hora is calculated

A hora (होरा) is a planetary hour. Each day has 24 of them: 12 between sunrise and sunset and 12 between sunset and the next sunrise. On a day with equal day and night every hora lasts 60 minutes; the rest of the year the day horas and night horas differ in length.

  1. Find the local sunrise and sunset. The calculator works these out for your city and date.
  2. Divide the day into 12 equal horas, and the night (sunset to the next sunrise) into 12 more.
  3. Give the first hora to the weekday’s planet: Sun on Sunday, Moon on Monday, Mars on Tuesday, Mercury on Wednesday, Jupiter on Thursday, Venus on Friday, Saturn on Saturday.
  4. Follow the planetary order. Each next hora belongs to the next planet in the order Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, which runs from the slowest planet to the fastest, and starts again after the Moon.

The order explains the weekdays themselves: after 24 horas the cycle has moved on three places, so the first hora of the next sunrise is the next weekday’s planet.

Moon चंद्रGoodTravel, meeting people, household purchases, public dealings.

Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and Moon horas are the ones families look for. The Sun hora suits work with government and seniors. Mars and Saturn horas are avoided for anything new.

Hora, choghadiya and Rahu kaal

Hora and choghadiya are both used for everyday timing, such as a purchase, a call, signing papers or setting out on a journey. The hora tells you which planet rules the hour, so you can match it to the task; the choghadiya marks the day in 16 good and bad periods. Many families also avoid Rahu kaal, even inside a good hora.

For a wedding, griha pravesh or the opening of a business, a muhurat is chosen from the full panchang and the family’s charts. Namieta can prepare one for you.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hora?

A hora is a planetary hour. The time from sunrise to sunset is cut into 12 equal horas and the time from sunset to the next sunrise into 12 more. Each hora belongs to one of the seven planets, from the Sun to Saturn.

Which hora is good?

Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and Moon horas are traditionally taken as good: Jupiter for worship, advice and money matters, Venus for art and purchases, Mercury for study and trade, Moon for travel and meeting people. The Sun hora suits government work. Mars and Saturn horas are avoided for new starts.

Is a hora exactly one hour?

Only when day and night are equal. A day hora is one twelfth of the time from sunrise to sunset, so in summer day horas are longer than an hour and night horas shorter. Some panchangs use fixed 60-minute horas from sunrise instead; this calculator uses the twelfths.

Why does the first hora change every day?

The first hora after sunrise belongs to the planet of the weekday: Sun on Sunday, Moon on Monday, Mars on Tuesday, Mercury on Wednesday, Jupiter on Thursday, Venus on Friday and Saturn on Saturday. The order of the planets after it never changes.

Should I use hora or choghadiya?

Both are used for everyday timing. Many families check the choghadiya first and use the hora to pick a planet that suits the task, and avoid Rahu kaal in either case. For a wedding or griha pravesh, a full muhurat from the panchang is chosen instead.
