How sade sati is calculated
- Find your Moon sign (rashi). The calculator works it out from your date of birth (the time helps on days when the Moon changes sign), or you can choose it.
- Find where Saturn is. Saturn’s sidereal sign changes from 1900 to 2100 are computed to the minute with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the same positions the planet positions page uses.
- Count from the Moon sign. Saturn in the sign before your Moon sign starts sade sati (first phase), Saturn over your Moon sign is the second phase, and Saturn in the sign after it is the third. Saturn in the 4th or 8th sign is dhaiya.

What is sade sati?
Sade sati (साढ़ेसाती, seven and a half) is the period when Saturn passes through three signs: the one before your Moon sign, your Moon sign and the one after it. Saturn spends about 2½ years in each sign, so the whole period lasts about 7½ years. It comes roughly once every 30 years.
Is sade sati counted from the Moon sign or the sun sign?
From the Moon sign (rashi) in the Indian sidereal zodiac. That is why the calculator asks for your date of birth: it finds where the Moon was when you were born. Your Western zodiac sign is usually a different sign.
What is Shani dhaiya?
Dhaiya (ढैय्या, two and a half) is the 2½ years when Saturn is in the 4th or the 8th sign from your Moon sign. The 4th is also called kantak or ardhashtama shani and the 8th ashtama shani.
Is sade sati always bad?
No. It is a period of responsibility, hard work and change, and many people do well in it. How it feels depends on where Saturn sits in your own chart, its strength and your running dasha, which is why two people with the same Moon sign can have very different experiences.
Why do the dates show Saturn stepping out?
When Saturn turns retrograde it can move back into the previous sign for a few months before going forward again. Panchangs count those months inside the same sade sati, so the calculator shows them as part of it.
