Tithi times are IST and hold for all of India. The day of the vrat and the time shown are worked out for sunrise, sunset and moonrise in Nagpur. Computed from the Sun and Moon’s positions (sidereal, Lahiri); months are amanta, and a Krishna paksha vrat also shows the month North Indian (purnimanta) calendars give it.
How Masik Shivratri is commonly kept
- Many people fast during the day, with fruit and milk or one simple meal, and some begin the monthly vrat from Maha Shivratri.
- Shiva puja at night: abhishek of the Shivling with water, milk or curd, bel leaves and a lamp, often with the main puja in nishita kaal.
- Chanting "Om Namah Shivaya", and some families stay awake through the night (jagran) with bhajans.
- The fast is commonly broken the next morning after sunrise.
Fasting does not suit everyone. If you are pregnant, elderly, have diabetes, blood pressure or any other health condition, or take regular medicines, please check with your doctor before fasting. A lighter fast with fruit and milk, or simply a prayer, is also a common way to keep the day.
How the dates are worked out
Masik Shivratri is the Krishna paksha Chaturdashi tithi: the Moon 336° to 348° ahead of the Sun. The begin and end times come from the Sun and Moon’s positions.
Nishita kaal is the 8th of the 15 muhurtas of the night at Nagpur, around midnight. The vrat is on the night whose nishita kaal Chaturdashi covers; when it touches two nights, the one it covers longer. The date shown is the evening the night begins, even though nishita kaal runs past 12 am.
Your family’s or temple’s panchang may follow a different rule or a different city; follow the one you trust.

Questions about Masik Shivratri
Masik Shivratri kab hai?
The line at the top of this page shows the next Masik Shivratri, and the tables list every one of this year and next with the nishita kaal and the Chaturdashi times. The current or next one is highlighted.
What is nishita kaal?
The muhurta around midnight, the 8th of the 15 parts of the night. It is about 40 to 55 minutes long and is the time Shivratri puja is traditionally done.
Why does the time run past midnight but show the earlier date?
A Hindu day runs from sunrise to sunrise, so the night after the evening of the date shown belongs to that day. A nishita kaal of 11:57 pm to 12:49 am belongs to the date in the table.
How is Masik Shivratri different from Maha Shivratri?
Masik Shivratri comes every month. Maha Shivratri is the Masik Shivratri of Phalguna (North Indian month; Magha in the amanta calendar), the most widely kept of the year. The table marks it.
Why does another calendar show a different day?
When Chaturdashi touches the nishita kaal of two nights, or a calendar is made for another city or follows another rule, it can give the other night. This page follows the common nishita rule for Nagpur.
