A tithi or nakshatra often changes during the day, so a panchang gives the one at sunrise and the time the next one begins. Families check the tithi and nakshatra for fasts, pujas and ceremonies, and avoid Vishti (Bhadra) karana and a few yogas, such as Vyatipata and Vaidhriti, for new beginnings. Many also avoid Rahu kaal and look at the choghadiya or hora for the hour. All of these are counted from the local sunrise; see sunrise and sunset today for your city.
When the Moon is in Kumbha or Meena, the days are called panchak, and some work is traditionally postponed. For a wedding, griha pravesh or a business opening, a muhurat is chosen from the full panchang and the family’s charts; Namieta can prepare one for you.
The Hindu almanac of the day. Panch-ang means five limbs: vaar (the weekday), tithi (the lunar day), nakshatra (the Moon’s star), yoga and karana. Together they are used to judge whether a day and time suit an event.
A tithi is the time the Moon takes to gain 12° on the Sun, which is between about 19 and 26 hours, so it rarely matches a calendar day. The tithi at sunrise is the tithi of the day; the panchang also shows when it ends and the next one begins.
The day starts at the local sunrise, which changes with the place, and times are shown in the local time zone. The end times of the tithi and nakshatra are the same moment everywhere, but the clock time and the sunrise they are compared with are not.
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the standard of most Indian panchangs, for the nakshatra, yoga and the Moon and Sun rashi. The tithi and karana do not depend on the ayanamsa.
Not yet. This page gives the five limbs, sun and moon times and the daily muhurat periods. Festival dates and month names depend on regional rules, and Namieta can confirm them for an important date.
