How the shop Vastu score is worked out
- Find north with a phone compass from the centre of the shop.
- Place each area in one of the eight directions.
- Compare with the traditional placements: the entrance in the north, north-east or east, the cash counter in the south-west with the cashier facing north or east, heavy stock in the south and west, light displays in the north and east, electrics in the south-east.
- Score: best 10 points, acceptable 5, avoided 0, as a percentage of the areas your shop has.

Where should the cash counter be in a shop?
Traditionally in the south-west part of the shop, with the cashier facing north or east and the cash box opening towards the north.
How is the score worked out?
Each answer is compared with the placement most Vastu texts give: the traditional best direction scores 10 points, an acceptable one 5 and an avoided one 0. The percentage is your total out of the maximum for the questions you answered.
Which direction should a shop entrance face?
North, east and north-east entrances are the traditional first choice. A shop with another entrance can still be arranged well inside, with the counter, stock and displays in the right zones.
Where should heavy stock be kept?
In the south, west and south-west, keeping the north-east of the shop light and open.
