Ank jyotish · Indian numerology chart
Vedic numerology chart (Indian numerology): numbers 1 to 9 and their planets
In Indian numerology each number from 1 to 9 is linked to one of the nine grahas. This chart puts the planet, lucky day, colours, ratna and friendly numbers of every number in one table, with how your three core numbers are found.
What "Vedic numerology" means
In India, "Vedic numerology" (also called Indian numerology or ank jyotish) usually means numerology read through the nine grahas of Vedic astrology. Each number from 1 to 9 has a ruling planet, and the nature, day, colours and gemstone of that planet are carried over to the number. Rahu and Ketu, the two shadow planets of Vedic astrology, rule 4 and 7.
Three numbers sit at the centre of a reading: the Mulank (Moolank) from the day you were born, the Bhagyank from your whole date of birth and the Namank (name number) from the letters of your name. "Vedic" here points to the link with jyotish and its nine grahas; it does not mean the chart is written out in the Vedas.
Practitioners do not all use the same lists. The days, colours, stones and friendly numbers below are the ones every calculator on this site uses; another numerologist may give a different day or colour for some numbers.
Vedic numerology chart: numbers 1 to 9
Each row links to the page on that number as a Mulank. The friendly numbers and the numbers to be careful with come from the natural friendship of the planets, the same table the compatibility calculator uses.

- A number always sits well with itself, so it is not repeated among its friendly numbers.
- A number to be careful with is not a bad number. It means the two planets do not regard each other as friends, so that pair is read as needing more patience.
- Rahu and Ketu have no weekday of their own in the seven-day week, so the days given for 4 and 7 follow common numerology practice; some numerologists use other days.
- Friendship between the planets is read both ways. For Rahu and Ketu the table largely follows the pattern of Saturn, a common convention.
Wear a ratna only after a Kundli check, never from the number alone: a planet that is weak or troublesome in your chart can make its stone unsuitable. Read about the nine navratna stones.
What each number stands for
The short title and keywords of each number, as the Mulank and Bhagyank calculator gives them, and the direction of its square in the Lo Shu grid.

| 2 | The peacemaker | sensitive, cooperative, intuitive | South-West |

| 4 | The builder | practical, disciplined, unconventional | South-East |
| 5 | The communicator | quick, adaptable, curious | Centre |
| 6 | The nurturer | caring, artistic, responsible | North-West |

| 8 | The achiever | determined, patient, ambitious | North-East |

The Lo Shu grid is a 3 by 3 square from Chinese tradition that many Indian numerologists use alongside these numbers; the direction is the side of the home linked with each square. Lo Shu grid calculator.
Your three core numbers and how each is found
Each of the three is reduced to one digit from 1 to 9 and then read against the chart above.
Mulank (Moolank)
Comes from: Day of birth
How it is found: Add the digits of the day you were born until one digit is left. The month and year are not used.
Read for: Your nature and how you meet each day.
Bhagyank
Comes from: Whole date of birth
How it is found: Add every digit of the day, month and year, then keep adding until one digit is left.
Read for: The direction your life tends to take; also called the destiny number.
Namank (name number)
Comes from: Letters of your name
How it is found: Give each letter its value from the Chaldean chart, add them all, then reduce the total to one digit.
Read for: How your everyday name sits with your birth numbers. It is the one number you can change.
Worked example: Rohan Kulkarni, born 14/08/1995
An ordinary name and date, worked out by the same engine as the calculators.
Mulank: the day of birth gives 1 + 4 = 5, so Mulank 5, ruled by Mercury.
Bhagyank: every digit of the date gives 1 + 4 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 5 = 37 → 10 → 1, so Bhagyank 1, ruled by the Sun.
Namank: by the Chaldean chart the letters of the name add up as follows.
- ROHAN: R 2 + O 7 + H 5 + A 1 + N 5 = 20
- KULKARNI: K 2 + U 6 + L 3 + K 2 + A 1 + R 2 + N 5 + I 1 = 22
Added together: 20 + 22 = 42 → 6, so Namank 6, ruled by Venus.
Read with the chart: Mulank 5 with Bhagyank 1 is good, Mulank 5 with Namank 6 is excellent, and Bhagyank 1 with Namank 6 is difficult.
A numerologist reads the three together, with the question you bring, rather than any one number alone. Work out your own numbers with the Mulank and Bhagyank calculator.
How the chart is used
Compatibility
Two people's Mulank and Bhagyank are paired using the friendly and careful columns. A friendly pair is read as easy to live with; a careful pair is read as needing more patience, not as a bar to the relationship.
Lucky dates
The number of a day, and the total of the whole date, are paired with your Mulank and Bhagyank, and the days whose pairs are friendly are the ones commonly chosen to begin something.
Name choice
When choosing a name or a new spelling, many people look for a Namank that is friendly with their Mulank and Bhagyank.

Vedic vs Pythagorean numerology
Vedic (Indian) numerology reads each number through its planet, Rahu (4) and Ketu (7) included, and finds the name number with the Chaldean chart, whose letter values run from 1 to 8.
Pythagorean (Western) numerology numbers the alphabet in order from 1 to 9, keeps master numbers such as 11 and 22, and centres on the life path number rather than the Mulank.

Questions about the Vedic numerology chart
What is a Vedic numerology chart?
It is the reference table of Indian numerology: each number from 1 to 9 with its ruling planet and the day, colours, gemstone and friendly numbers that come with that planet. Your Mulank, Bhagyank and Namank are each read against it.
Which planet rules each number in Indian numerology?
1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars. Rahu and Ketu are the shadow planets of Vedic astrology; Western numerology often gives 4 and 7 to Uranus and Neptune instead.
Is Vedic numerology the same as Chaldean numerology?
Not quite. The planets of the numbers come from Vedic astrology, while the letter values used for the name number come from the Chaldean chart. In India the two are usually used together, as they are on this site.
How do I find my Mulank, Bhagyank and Namank?
Mulank: add the digits of your day of birth. Bhagyank: add every digit of your whole date of birth. Namank: add the Chaldean values of the letters of your name. Keep adding until one digit is left. For Rohan Kulkarni, born 14/08/1995, that gives Mulank 5, Bhagyank 1 and Namank 6.
Should I wear the gemstone of my number?
Not on the number alone. A ratna strengthens its planet, and a planet that is weak or troublesome in your Kundli can make its stone unsuitable even when it matches your number. Namieta suggests a stone only after checking the chart; crystals are a gentler choice to keep at home or work.
Why do websites give different lucky days or colours?
Because traditions differ, most of all for 4 and 7, whose planets Rahu and Ketu have no weekday of their own. Keep to one list; the values here are the ones every calculator on this site uses.
Can the chart predict events?
No. It describes tendencies linked with each number and its planet, not fixed events or dates. Use it for reflection and planning, and read your numbers together rather than one at a time.
