Swords tarot cards and their meanings

Swords are the suit of air. They stand for the mind: thought, truth, words, decisions and conflict. In a reading they come up around exams, interviews, contracts, arguments and legal papers, and around the nights when worry will not let you sleep.

The suit has the hardest pictures in the deck, and they are worth reading calmly. The Ace is a clear insight, the Two a decision put off, the Three a painful truth and the Four rest after strain. The Five to Seven show a hollow win, a move toward calmer water and a plan that avoids honest talk. The Eight to Ten show the mind at its most trapped, sleepless and defeated, and also the point where the worst is over. The court cards are a curious, watchful Page, a fast and forceful Knight, a Queen who speaks plainly, and a King who judges by logic and fairness.

What these cards speak about

When several of these cards come up

When Swords fill a spread, the question is mostly being fought in the mind. Sort the thoughts that keep coming back into facts and fears, and write both lists down. A student who draws the Two, Eight and Nine of Swords while waiting for a result is usually being shown how much of the strain comes from waiting and worry, not from the result itself. Swords often suggest that one clear conversation would help more than another night of thinking. Reversed Swords may point to a fear easing, or to a fear that has grown louder than the facts.
