South facing house Vastu: layout and main door
A south facing house is one where you face south as you step out of the main door. South is an acceptable direction for an entrance in Vastu, and many south facing homes are fine with the right layout; the door is commonly placed from the middle of the south wall towards the south-east side, short of the corner, and away from the south-west end.
Main entrance: the short answer
Best: North, North-east, East. Acceptable: North-west, West, South. Avoid: South-west, South-east. The main door brings energy in; north and east doors let in the morning light, and the south-west corner is kept closed and heavy.
This guide addresses the worry around south facing homes calmly and then covers the door, the room by room layout and the mistakes that matter.
Are south facing houses unlucky?
This is the most common Vastu worry, and it is usually overstated. South belongs to Yama and Mars and is traditionally linked with rest, recognition and stability. In Vastu it is an acceptable direction for an entrance; only the south-west and south-east corners are avoided for the door.
Many south facing homes are planned well and lived in comfortably. What makes the difference is the exact position of the door, a solid and heavy south-west, a kitchen in the south-east and enough open space in the north and east.
Where to place the main door
Measure the south wall from the south-east corner to the south-west corner and mark the middle. The door is commonly placed in the middle or slightly towards the south-east side of it, but not in the south-east corner itself. The south-west end is avoided, as the south-west is kept closed.
Some consultants divide the wall into nine equal parts from the 81-square mandala and rate each part. Their charts differ in detail, so this is best used when planning new construction.
Room by room layout
Standing on the road and looking at a south facing house, the south-west is at the front left and the south-east at the front right. The north-east is at the back right.
| Room | First choice | Avoid | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main entrance | North, North-east, East | South-west, South-east | Middle of the south wall or slightly towards the south-east, short of the corner. |
| Living or drawing room | North, East, North-east | South-west, South-east | North, east or north-east is first choice; a front room on the south is also used. |
| Pooja room | North-east | South, South-west, South-east, North-west | Back right corner, the quietest part of the house. |
| Kitchen | South-east | North-east, South-west, North | Front right corner; keep a wall between the stove and the door. |
| Dining area | West, East | North-east, South-east, South-west | West or east, close to the kitchen. |
| Master bedroom | South-west | North-east, South-east | Front left corner; keep it solid with few openings. |
| Children’s bedroom | West, North-west, East | South-east, South-west, North-east | West, north-west or east. |
| Guest room | North-west | South-west, North-east | North-west, at the back left. |
| Toilets and bathrooms | North-west, West | North-east, South-west | North-west or west; never in the back right corner. |
| Staircase | South-west, South, West | North-east, North, East | South, south-west or west, at the front. |
| Underground tank or borewell | North-east, North, East | South-west, South-east, South | At the back, in the north-east, north or east. |
| Overhead water tank | South-west, West, South | North-east, North, East, South-east | Over the front left part of the roof. |
What a south facing house offers
- The heavy south-west sits at the front, where the master bedroom, staircase or overhead tank can anchor it.
- The north-east falls at the back, away from the road, which suits a quiet pooja room.
- A south-east kitchen near the front is easy to plan with a separate service entry.
- The open space Vastu prefers in the north and east can be a private back garden.
Common mistakes
- Placing the door at the south-west end, or right in the south-east corner.
- Leaving the front south-west as an open car porch.
- Building the house right up to the north boundary, leaving no open space at the back.
- Putting a toilet, septic tank or staircase in the back north-east.
- Moving out of a well planned home only because it faces south.
In a south facing flat
Keep the entrance bright and well kept, place the shoe rack on the west side of the door, keep the south-west room for the head of the family and set up the pooja shelf on an east or north wall. Heavy furniture along the south wall of the living room is a common, simple adjustment.

House Vastu CalculatorDo
- Check the facing with a compass at the main door.
- Place the door in the middle or slightly towards the south-east, short of the corner.
- Keep the front south-west built up, solid and heavy.
- Leave open space in the north and east at the back.
- Use the south-east for the kitchen with a wall between the stove and the door.
- Keep the boundary wall on the south a little higher and solid.
Avoid
- Do not place the door at the south-west end of the wall.
- Do not put the door in the south-east corner itself.
- Do not leave the front south-west as the open part of the plot.
- Do not build toilets or stairs in the back north-east.
- Do not reject a well planned home only because it faces south.
Adjustments without rebuilding
- Many consultants suggest a heavy, solid wooden door with a raised threshold for a south entrance.
- A bright light at the entrance and a clean, uncluttered doorstep are commonly suggested for south doors.
- Many consultants suggest heavy planters or a solid bench along the south-west of the front space.
- Where the door sits towards the south-west, a commonly suggested adjustment is keeping a heavier piece of furniture inside along the south-west wall.
These are traditional practices that many families follow. They vary between Vastu schools; for your own home, a consultant can say which matter most.
Questions
Is a south facing house bad as per Vastu?
No. South is an acceptable direction for an entrance in Vastu, and many south facing homes are fine with the right layout. Only the south-west and south-east corners are avoided for the door.
Where should the main door be in a south facing house?
The door is commonly placed in the middle of the south wall or slightly towards the south-east, but not in the south-east corner itself. The south-west end is avoided.
Where should the kitchen be in a south facing house?
The south-east, which is the front right corner as you face the house from the road. Keep a wall between the stove and the main door.
Where should the master bedroom be in a south facing house?
The south-west, at the front left as you face the house. Keep that corner solid, with fewer and smaller openings.
Should I avoid buying a south facing flat?
Not on facing alone. Check where the door sits along the wall, where the kitchen, toilets and master bedroom are, and whether the north-east is open. A well laid out south facing flat can be a sound choice.
