What the card shows
An old man in a robe sits by an archway, stroking one of two white dogs. Under the arch a young man and woman talk, while a child holds on to the woman’s dress and reaches towards a dog. Ten pentacles are laid out across the scene in the Tree of Life pattern.
Ten of Pentacles upright
The Ten of Pentacles is the security that lasts across generations: a family home, a business passed on, traditions kept alive, wealth that is cared for rather than spent. In the Golden Dawn system it is Mercury in Virgo, where Mercury is exalted: careful records, sound management and good order, which are what keep a family’s wealth intact. Think of a family that has run the same sweet shop for three generations, where the grandfather still sits at the counter on Sundays and the granddaughter now manages the accounts. The card asks you to honour what was passed down and build something that can be passed on: not only money, but values, skills and a home where people feel they belong.
Ten of Pentacles reversed
Reversed, the Ten of Pentacles shows trouble in the family structure. Old quarrels over property, inheritance or the family business come back. Some people feel left out of decisions, or lonely in a full house. It can also show a family arrangement that is changing and needs new rules. Raise the issue calmly, listen before deciding, and put agreements in writing. A neutral elder or a professional can help when talks keep breaking down.
In love and relationships
In love, the Ten of Pentacles shows commitment for the long term: marriage, a shared home, and the joining of two families. It favours stability and shared values. Reversed, it shows friction with in-laws, disagreements over where to live, or a relationship that looks settled from outside but feels lonely within.
In career and study
At work, the Ten of Pentacles favours a family business, an established company or a role with long-term security. It suits work that builds something lasting. Reversed, it shows tension in a family firm or confusion over who controls what. Clear written roles help everyone.
In money matters
With money, the Ten of Pentacles points to family wealth, property, inheritance and long-term planning. It is a good card for making a will, organising papers, or planning for the next generation with a qualified adviser. Reversed, settle property questions openly and on paper.
The card’s advice
Hold the family talk somewhere calm, and listen before deciding.
Yes or no
Ten of Pentacles is commonly read as a “Yes”. Lasting security and family support lean to yes, once everyone is heard.
These meanings follow the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith deck. A card is always read with its position in the spread and the cards around it, so treat them as starting points, not fixed answers.
