What the card shows
A young man sits under a tree with his arms folded and his legs crossed, staring at three cups on the grass. A hand from a cloud offers him a fourth cup, but he does not seem to see it.
Four of Cups upright
The Four of Cups is feeling flat even when nothing is really wrong. The young man sits with folded arms, bored with the three cups in front of him, and misses the fourth being offered. Its decan is the Moon in Cancer, the Moon in its own sign, where feelings turn inward and moods take over. Think of a student who did well and feels nothing about it, or a person who keeps refusing invitations and then feels lonely. Some withdrawal is healthy, a pause to think. The card asks you to look up now and then, because something new may be offered while you are looking away.
Four of Cups reversed
Reversed, the young man begins to look up. Interest returns, an opportunity is noticed at last, or a long low mood starts to lift. It can show accepting what is and choosing to move on. Occasionally it shows the opposite, a retreat even further inward. Notice which way you are moving. Say yes to one small invitation, and see how it feels to take part again.
In love and relationships
Feeling bored or disconnected in a relationship, or ignoring someone who is offering affection. It can also mean needing time alone to understand what you feel. Reversed, renewed interest, a fresh start, or finally noticing the person who has been there all along.
In career and study
Boredom at work, low motivation, or turning down chances without really considering them. Take a fresh look before you dismiss an offer. Reversed, interest in your work returns, a new offer appears, or you find the energy to make a change.
In money matters
Paying little attention to money, or missing an opportunity out of disinterest. Review what you have, including offers you brushed aside. Reversed, the motivation to sort out your finances comes back.
The card’s advice
Look up from what bores you; something new may be held out to you.
Yes or no
Four of Cups is commonly read as a “No”. Not for now: the interest or the timing is not there yet.
These meanings follow the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith deck. A card is always read with its position in the spread and the cards around it, so treat them as starting points, not fixed answers.
