Vastu for relationships: a calm, steady bedroom
For relationships, Vastu traditionally looks first at the master bedroom: it is placed in the south-west of the home, the earth zone linked with stability and relationships, with the bed set so that the couple sleep with their heads to the south. Soft, earthy colours, pairs of objects and an uncluttered room without broken things complete the usual advice.
Master bedroom: the short answer
Best: South-west. Acceptable: South, West, North-west, North, East. Avoid: North-east, South-east. The south-west, the earth zone, gives the head of the family stability.
No arrangement of furniture can settle a disagreement or make two people understand each other; that comes from time and honest conversation. What Vastu offers is a calmer, steadier room, which many couples find a better place to rest and talk.
The master bedroom in the south-west
The south-west is the earth zone, ruled in Vastu by Nairutya and linked with stability, the head of the family and relationships. The master bedroom is traditionally placed here. The south, west, north-west, north and east are acceptable; the north-east and south-east are traditionally avoided for the couple’s room.
Where the master bedroom cannot move, many consultants suggest that the couple at least sleep in the south-west part of whichever room they use.
The bed and sleeping direction
Most texts recommend sleeping with the head to the south, which is said to give deep and restful sleep. East is also good, and the south-west suits a bed along that wall. Sleeping with the head to the north is traditionally avoided, as is the north-east.
A few points are commonly given about the bed itself. Many consultants prefer a single mattress across a double bed rather than two joined singles, a solid headboard against a wall, and a bed that does not sit under an overhead beam.
- Head to the south, or to the east.
- Bed in the south-west part of the room.
- A single mattress across a double bed, as commonly suggested.
- Headboard against a solid wall, not under a beam.
Pairs of objects and pictures
Vastu commonly suggests that the couple’s room should show togetherness. Lamps on both sides of the bed, two matching bedside tables and pictures of pairs or of the family together are typical suggestions. Pictures of conflict, loneliness or a single figure are often moved to another room.
This needs nothing new: most homes already have photographs and lamps that can be arranged this way.
Colours for the bedroom
The colours traditionally linked with the south-west are peach, brown and earthy tones. Many consultants also suggest soft pinks and warm neutrals for a couple’s room. Very dark or harsh colours, and large areas of bright red, are commonly avoided in the bedroom.
Clutter, broken things and the rest of the home
Clutter under the bed, broken furniture, stopped clocks and torn bedding are commonly cleared from the bedroom. Many consultants also suggest keeping televisions and work out of the room. A mirror that faces the bed is usually moved or covered at night.
Beyond the bedroom, the north-west is the zone for guests and visitors, and the north-east is kept for prayer. A home where each zone is used for its own purpose is said to feel more settled overall.
