Money plant Vastu: direction, care and common beliefs
As per Vastu, the money plant is traditionally kept in the south-east of the home or of the room, the zone of Agni and Venus that Vastu links with energy and cash flow. The north-east is commonly avoided for it, as that corner is kept for prayer and light water, and so is the heavy south-west.
Money plant: the short answer
Best: South-east. Acceptable: North, East, South, West, North-west. Avoid: North-east, South-west. The south-east, the zone of Agni and Venus, is where most consultants keep a money plant; the north-east is kept for prayer and the south-west for heavy, settled things.
The money plant is the common pothos, an easy climber that grows in soil or in a bottle of water. Its name is a nickname: a plant cannot promise money, and no honest consultant will say it does. What Vastu offers is a sensible place for it, and the idea that a healthy, growing plant in a cared-for home is a good sign.
Why the south-east
The south-east is the zone of Agni, fire, and of the planet Venus, and Vastu links it with energy and the flow of money through a household. A green, growing plant in that corner is the commonly given pairing. The north and east are acceptable alternatives because they are light, open zones; the north-east is the direction most consultants avoid, and many keep the heavy south-west free of it too. Practitioners differ on the rest: a few also avoid the north-west, and the money plant is a modern addition to Vastu advice rather than a plant named in the classical texts.
| Part | Traditional first choice | Acceptable | Traditionally avoided |
|---|---|---|---|
| Money plant | South-east | North, east, south, west, north-west | North-east, south-west |
Where in the home it is kept
The money plant is an indoor plant in Vastu. The living room and the dining area are the usual places; a balcony in the south-east of the flat works too if the plant gets some shade. Many people keep it in the south-east corner of the living room, on a shelf or a stand.
| Place | Commonly given |
|---|---|
| Living room | South-east corner, on a shelf or stand |
| Dining area | South-east side, away from the dining table’s north-east |
| Balcony | South-east side, out of harsh afternoon sun |
| Bedroom | Usually left out, or one small pot away from the head of the bed |
| Office desk | A small pot on the right-hand or south-east side of the desk |
Pot or bottle, and which way it grows
Both soil and water are fine. In water, a clean glass or a green or blue bottle is commonly used, and the water is changed every few days so it never turns stale. In soil, a clean pot with a saucer that is emptied after watering is the usual choice.
Vastu advice commonly asks that the vine be trained upwards, along a stick or a string, rather than trailing down to the floor. Upward growth is read as rising energy; a vine that sprawls on the floor or dries at the ends is trimmed.
Common beliefs, and what they are
You will hear that a money plant must not be given away, that it should be grown from a cutting taken from someone else, or that it must never touch the ground. These are folk beliefs, not rules from the Vastu texts. They do no harm if you like them, and you can ignore them if you do not.

House Vastu CalculatorDo
- Keep the money plant in the south-east of the home or the room.
- Train the vine upwards along a stick or string.
- Change the water every few days if it grows in a bottle.
- Trim yellow or dried leaves as soon as they appear.
- Keep the pot or bottle clean and unchipped.
- Give it bright light without harsh afternoon sun.
Avoid
- Do not keep the money plant in the north-east.
- Do not let the vine trail and sprawl on the floor.
- Do not leave a dried or dying plant in the pot.
- Do not let stale water stand in the bottle or saucer.
- Do not keep it outside the house in the open garden; it is treated as an indoor plant.
- Do not expect the plant itself to bring money; its name is a nickname.
Adjustments without rebuilding
- A money plant in the north-east is commonly moved to the south-east of the same room.
- A trailing vine is commonly trained upwards on a stick or a string rather than cut back hard.
- A dried plant is commonly replaced with a fresh cutting in clean water.
- Where the south-east is not possible, the north or east of the room is the usual second choice.
These are traditional practices that many families follow. They vary between Vastu schools; for your own home, a consultant can say which matter most.
Questions
Which direction is best for a money plant as per Vastu?
The south-east, the zone of Agni and Venus that Vastu links with energy and cash flow. The north and east are acceptable; the north-east and south-west are commonly avoided.
Can I keep a money plant in the bedroom?
Most consultants leave it out of the bedroom or keep one small pot away from the head of the bed. The living room and dining area are the usual places.
Is it better in water or in soil?
Either is fine. In water, change it every few days and keep the glass or bottle clean; in soil, empty the saucer after watering so water does not stand.
Does a money plant really bring money?
No plant can promise money. The name is a nickname for the pothos plant. In Vastu, a healthy plant in the right zone is part of a cared-for home, and that is all it is said to be.
Is it true that a money plant should not be given away?
That is a folk belief, not a rule from the Vastu texts. You can follow it if you like; it is not something Vastu requires.
