Wall clock Vastu: which wall and direction to hang a clock

As per Vastu, a wall clock is commonly hung on the north or east wall of a room, the zones of new opportunities and growth. The north-east wall is also fine. The south and south-west walls are traditionally avoided, and a clock is not hung directly above the main door or above the head of the bed.

Wall clock: the short answer

Best: North, East, North-east. Acceptable: West, North-west, South-east. Avoid: South, South-west. A clock is commonly hung on the north or east wall, the zones of new opportunities and growth; the south and south-west walls are traditionally avoided.

A clock is one of the simplest things to place well, because moving it takes a minute. Vastu reads a clock as the flow of time through the home, so the advice is about where it hangs and about keeping it working. This guide covers the direction, room by room placement and what to do with a stopped clock.

Which wall suits a clock

Here the direction is the wall the clock hangs on. North belongs to Kubera and new opportunities, east to the rising sun and growth, so these are the walls most consultants give. West, north-west and south-east are acceptable, though practitioners differ and some keep clocks off the west wall too. The south is linked with Yama and rest, and the south-west with stability, so a clock that marks time passing is traditionally kept off those walls.

Keep it working

Vastu treats a stopped or broken clock as stuck energy, so the most common advice is simple: keep every clock running and on time. A clock that has stopped is repaired or the battery changed promptly; one that cannot be repaired is taken down.

Clocks that run a few minutes fast or slow on purpose are commonly reset to the right time. A cracked glass is replaced. Old clocks kept only for decoration are best kept working too, or stored away.

Shape, colour and pendulum clocks

Round, square and rectangular clocks are all used; there is no strict rule on shape. Many people match the colour to the wall’s direction, using the colours each zone is linked with: green or light blue in the north, white or light green in the east. Pendulum clocks are commonly hung on the north or east wall, like any other clock.

Do

  • Hang the clock on the north or east wall of the room.
  • Keep every clock running and set to the right time.
  • Change the battery or repair a stopped clock promptly.
  • In the study, hang the clock where the student can see it.
  • Keep the glass and the face clean.

Avoid

  • Do not hang a clock on the south or south-west wall.
  • Do not hang a clock directly above the main door.
  • Do not hang a clock above the bed or facing the head of the bed.
  • Do not keep stopped or broken clocks on the wall.
  • Do not set clocks fast or slow on purpose.

Adjustments without rebuilding

  • A clock on the south wall is commonly moved to the north or east wall of the same room.
  • A stopped clock is commonly repaired or taken down rather than left hanging.
  • A clock above the bed is commonly moved to the north or east wall, away from the head of the bed.
  • Where only the south wall is free, many consultants suggest a small clock or a table clock on the north or east side instead.

These are traditional practices that many families follow. They vary between Vastu schools; for your own home, a consultant can say which matter most.

Questions

Which direction is best for a wall clock as per Vastu?

The north or east wall is the most commonly given. The north-east wall is also fine; west, north-west and south-east are acceptable.

Why is the south wall avoided for a clock?

The south is linked with Yama and rest, and the south-west with stability. A clock marks time passing, so it is traditionally kept off those walls.

Can I hang a clock above the main door?

It is commonly avoided. Hang it on the north or east wall of the living room instead, where people see it as they come in.

Where should the clock be in the bedroom?

On the north or east wall, small and quiet, and not above the bed or facing the head of the bed.

What should I do with a clock that has stopped?

Change the battery or have it repaired. A clock that cannot be repaired is commonly taken down rather than left on the wall.
