Moonga (red coral): who should wear it and how

Moonga, or red coral, is the ratna of Mars in the navratna. This page explains what coral is, which lagnas it is traditionally considered for, how it is commonly worn, its substitute, how to spot dyed or imitation coral, and how to look after it.

Check your Kundli first

Wear a gemstone only after Namieta has checked your Kundli. A ratna strengthens its planet, and a planet that is weak or troublesome in your chart can make a stone unsuitable even when it matches your Mulank. Crystals are a gentler choice to keep at home or work.

What red coral is

Red coral is the branch-like skeleton built by tiny sea animals over many years. It is cut and polished into beads, ovals and triangles. Under a lens natural coral shows fine parallel growth lines along its length, a little like wood grain.

What red coral is traditionally linked with

Traditionally linked with courage, energy and drive.

  • courage, energy and drive
  • property, land and building
  • brothers and sisters
  • the push to start and finish a task

These are traditional associations, not promises. A stone is not medicine or financial advice, and no result is guaranteed.

Who red coral is traditionally suggested for

Red coral is most often considered when Mars is the lagna lord (Mesha or Vrishchika lagna) or rules a trine, such as for Karka, Simha, Dhanu and Meena lagna.

In Jyotish a ratna is chosen from the Kundli, not from the sun sign or Moon sign alone. The usual starting point is the lagna (ascendant): the stone of the lagna lord is commonly the first one considered, then the stones of the planets that rule the 5th and 9th houses (the trines). Planets that rule only the 6th, 8th or 12th house are usually not strengthened. The table applies that rule to Mars for each of the 12 lagnas. It is a starting point only: Mars’s sign, house, strength and the running dasha are read before a stone is suggested.

Who should be careful

Coral is usually avoided when Mars rules only difficult houses for your lagna. Mars is also read for Manglik dosha, so the chart is checked before a stone is suggested, and people who anger easily are often advised to wait.

Stones commonly not worn with red coral: emerald (Panna), blue sapphire (Neelam), hessonite (Gomed) and cat’s eye (Lehsunia). Their planets are treated as unfriendly in the planet friendship table used on this site.

How red coral is commonly worn

Metalgold or copper (some traditions use silver)
Fingerring finger
DayTuesday
Timein the morning, about an hour after sunrise
Weight6 to 9 ratti

These are commonly suggested practices, and they differ between traditions and astrologers. Follow the advice given with your chart. The gem trade’s ratti (pakki ratti) is about 0.91 carat; the older goldsmith’s ratti is smaller, about 0.61 carat, so ask which one is meant.

Substitutes and crystals

The upratna (substitute stones) commonly used for Mars are Carnelian. They are read as gentler than red coral and are often suggested when the main ratna is not advised. Crystals often chosen for Mars are Carnelian, Red Jasper and Bloodstone.

Carnelian and red jasper are often chosen as reminders to act with courage and stay steady.

Natural, treated or imitation?

  • Dyed coral, and pale "bamboo coral" dyed red, are sold as moonga. The dye often collects in cracks and drill holes.
  • Reconstituted coral is made from coral powder and resin, and looks very even, without growth lines.
  • Plastic and glass imitations are common. Plastic feels light and warm.
  • Do not try acid or vinegar tests at home: they damage real coral.

Home tests (water, flame, scratching, rubbing) are unreliable and some damage the stone. Buy with a report from an independent gem testing laboratory that names the stone, says whether it is natural or laboratory-grown, and lists any treatment. Keep the report with the stone.

Caring for red coral

  • Keep coral away from perfume, sweat, lemon, vinegar and household cleaners.
  • Wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaners.
  • Store it on its own, as it scratches easily, and away from heat.
  • Take the ring off for heavy work, gardening, cleaning with chemicals and swimming.

Questions about red coral

Who should wear Moonga (red coral)?

Red Coral is the ratna of Mars. By the usual lagna rule it is commonly considered for Mesha, Karka, Simha, Vrishchika, Dhanu and Meena, where Mars rules the 1st, 5th or 9th house, and usually avoided for Vrishabha, Mithuna and Kanya, where it rules only the 6th, 8th or 12th. The final choice depends on Mars’s strength and placement in your Kundli.

Which finger and metal are used for red coral?

Red Coral is commonly set in gold or copper (some traditions use silver) and worn on the ring finger, on a Tuesday, in the morning, about an hour after sunrise. These are commonly suggested practices and differ between traditions; follow the advice given with your chart.

What can I wear instead of red coral?

The common upratna (substitute) for red coral is Carnelian. Crystals often chosen for Mars are Carnelian, Red Jasper and Bloodstone. Crystals are kept at home or work as a reminder of an intention and are the gentler choice when a ratna is not advised.

How can I tell if red coral is natural?

Only a gem testing laboratory can say for certain. Buy red coral with a report from an independent laboratory that names the stone, says whether it is natural or laboratory-grown, and lists any treatment. Home tests are unreliable and some can damage the stone.

Is red coral a stone?

Not in the mineral sense. Coral is organic, the skeleton of a sea animal, which is why it is soft and needs gentle care. In the navratna it is counted as the ratna of Mars all the same.
