Pukhraj (yellow sapphire): who should wear it and how

Pukhraj, or yellow sapphire, is the ratna of Jupiter (Guru) in the navratna and one of the most asked-about stones. This page explains what it is, which lagnas it is traditionally considered for, how it is commonly worn, its substitutes, how to tell a natural pukhraj from a treated or look-alike stone, and how to look after it.

Check your Kundli first

Wear a gemstone only after Namieta has checked your Kundli. A ratna strengthens its planet, and a planet that is weak or troublesome in your chart can make a stone unsuitable even when it matches your Mulank. Crystals are a gentler choice to keep at home or work.

What yellow sapphire is

Yellow sapphire is corundum coloured yellow by traces of iron. The usual preference is a clear, even yellow without a brown or green tint. Because Jupiter is treated as the great benefic, pukhraj is often thought of as a safe stone, but it is still chosen from the chart.

What yellow sapphire is traditionally linked with

Traditionally linked with wisdom, teaching, good advice and growth.

  • wisdom, learning and teaching
  • good advice, elders and the guru
  • marriage, especially in a woman’s chart in the traditional reading
  • children, steady growth and good fortune

These are traditional associations, not promises. A stone is not medicine or financial advice, and no result is guaranteed.

Who yellow sapphire is traditionally suggested for

Pukhraj is most often considered when Jupiter is the lagna lord (Dhanu or Meena lagna) or rules a trine, such as for Mesha, Karka, Simha and Vrishchika lagna.

In Jyotish a ratna is chosen from the Kundli, not from the sun sign or Moon sign alone. The usual starting point is the lagna (ascendant): the stone of the lagna lord is commonly the first one considered, then the stones of the planets that rule the 5th and 9th houses (the trines). Planets that rule only the 6th, 8th or 12th house are usually not strengthened. The table applies that rule to Jupiter for each of the 12 lagnas. It is a starting point only: Jupiter’s sign, house, strength and the running dasha are read before a stone is suggested.

Who should be careful

Pukhraj is usually avoided when Jupiter rules only difficult houses for your lagna, as is often said for Vrishabha, Tula and Makara lagna. Being a benefic planet does not make Jupiter good for every chart.

Stones commonly not worn with yellow sapphire: emerald (Panna) and diamond (Heera). Their planets are treated as unfriendly in the planet friendship table used on this site.

These are commonly suggested practices, and they differ between traditions and astrologers. Follow the advice given with your chart. The gem trade’s ratti (pakki ratti) is about 0.91 carat; the older goldsmith’s ratti is smaller, about 0.61 carat, so ask which one is meant.

Substitutes and crystals

The upratna (substitute stones) commonly used for Jupiter are Yellow Topaz and Citrine. They are read as gentler than yellow sapphire and are often suggested when the main ratna is not advised. Crystals often chosen for Jupiter are Citrine, Yellow Calcite and Golden Topaz.

Citrine is often placed on a study or work desk as a reminder of learning and steady growth.

Natural, treated or imitation?

  • Many yellow sapphires are heated, and some are beryllium-treated to turn pale stones golden. The report should say "no heat" or name the treatment.
  • Yellow topaz and citrine are often sold as pukhraj. They are proper upratnas when they are sold under their own name.
  • Lab-made yellow sapphire and yellow glass are also widely sold as pukhraj.

Home tests (water, flame, scratching, rubbing) are unreliable and some damage the stone. Buy with a report from an independent gem testing laboratory that names the stone, says whether it is natural or laboratory-grown, and lists any treatment. Keep the report with the stone.

Caring for yellow sapphire

  • Clean it with warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush, then dry it.
  • Store it on its own: sapphire scratches softer stones.
  • Check the setting every few months so the stone does not loosen.
  • Take the ring off for heavy work, gardening, cleaning with chemicals and swimming.

Questions about yellow sapphire

Who should wear Pukhraj (yellow sapphire)?

Yellow Sapphire is the ratna of Jupiter. By the usual lagna rule it is commonly considered for Mesha, Karka, Simha, Vrishchika, Dhanu and Meena, where Jupiter rules the 1st, 5th or 9th house, and usually avoided for Vrishabha, Tula and Makara, where it rules only the 6th, 8th or 12th. The final choice depends on Jupiter’s strength and placement in your Kundli.

Which finger and metal are used for yellow sapphire?

Yellow Sapphire is commonly set in gold and worn on the index finger, on a Thursday, in the morning, in the bright half of the month (shukla paksha). These are commonly suggested practices and differ between traditions; follow the advice given with your chart.

What can I wear instead of yellow sapphire?

The common upratna (substitute) for yellow sapphire is Yellow Topaz and Citrine. Crystals often chosen for Jupiter are Citrine, Yellow Calcite and Golden Topaz. Crystals are kept at home or work as a reminder of an intention and are the gentler choice when a ratna is not advised.

How can I tell if yellow sapphire is natural?

Only a gem testing laboratory can say for certain. Buy yellow sapphire with a report from an independent laboratory that names the stone, says whether it is natural or laboratory-grown, and lists any treatment. Home tests are unreliable and some can damage the stone.

Is pukhraj safe for everyone because Jupiter is a benefic?

No. Jupiter is the natural benefic, but for some lagnas it rules difficult houses, and then pukhraj is usually not suggested. The lagna table on this page shows the traditional reading for each lagna; the full chart decides.

Can yellow topaz be worn instead of pukhraj?

Yellow topaz is the common upratna (substitute) for pukhraj, along with citrine. It is read as gentler, and it should be bought as topaz, not as a cheaper pukhraj.
