What is Bhrigu Nandi Nadi (BNN) astrology?

By Namieta ModiUpdated

Bhrigu Nandi Nadi, usually shortened to BNN, is a way of reading a birth chart. Where a Kundli reading usually goes house by house, a BNN reading starts from the planets and looks at how they are linked to one another. This guide explains the idea in plain words, how it differs from a Kundli reading, and what to expect from a session.

In short: BNN (Bhrigu Nandi Nadi) reads your birth chart through the planets and the links between them, such as planets in the same sign, or 2, 5, 7, 9 or 12 signs apart. A Kundli (Parashari) reading starts from the lagna and the twelve houses instead. Both use the same chart, and a reading helps you think a question through; it does not promise outcomes.

This is a general description of the method. Different readers work in different ways, so treat it as an introduction, not a rulebook.

What does BNN stand for?

BNN stands for Bhrigu Nandi Nadi. The name points to the sage Bhrigu, a figure of Indian astrological tradition, and to Nandi, and it belongs to the Nadi family of astrology. In that tradition a chart is read for the story the planets tell together, instead of one factor at a time.

The method as it is taught today became known mainly through the 20th-century writings of the astrologer R. G. Rao. Nadi texts are traditionally linked with ancient sages, but their exact age is not known, so the link with Bhrigu and Nandi is best read as tradition.

How a BNN reading looks at your chart

A BNN reading begins from the planets in your birth chart. It asks two plain questions about each of them:

  • What does this planet stand for? Each graha is linked with certain themes. Jupiter, for example, is traditionally linked with learning and guidance, Venus with relationships and comfort, and Saturn with work, patience and delay.
  • Which other planets is it linked to? Planets can share a sign, face each other (7 signs apart) or sit in a fixed position from one another, such as the next or the previous sign (2nd and 12th) or a trine (5th and 9th). In BNN these links are read as the way the planets work together on a subject.

Many BNN readers also look at timing through the slow-moving planets, mainly Jupiter and Saturn, as they pass over or link with the planets of your birth chart.

For a question such as work, marriage or a move, the reader looks at the planets linked with that subject, and at how they are connected to each other in your chart.

BNN and a Kundli (Parashari) reading

Both read the same birth chart. They differ mainly in where they begin.

Kundli reading (Parashari) BNN reading
Starts from The lagna, the twelve houses and their lords The planets and how they are linked
Usually reads The chart house by house What each planet stands for in your question
Timing Mainly the running dasha (planetary period) Often the transits of Jupiter and Saturn over your birth planets
Good for A full picture of the chart Starting from one clear question

Many people find it useful to hear both views of the same chart. See Kundli and astrology reading for the house-based way.

What to expect in a reading with Namieta

Namieta gives BNN readings online by video call to people across India, booked on WhatsApp, with a visit in person when the consultation needs it. A session usually goes like this:

  1. You send your details. Your full name, date of birth, time of birth, place of birth and your question, on WhatsApp.
  2. Your chart is prepared. Your birth chart is drawn up before you talk.
  3. You talk it through. Namieta explains what the chart shows for your question, in plain words, and explains any Sanskrit terms as she goes.
  4. You decide. You leave with a clearer picture. The decisions stay yours.

What a reading is, and is not

A BNN reading is a way to look at your chart so you can think a question through. It does not promise outcomes or predict events with certainty, and it is not a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice.

How to prepare

  • Keep your date, time and place of birth ready. A birth certificate or hospital record is the best source for the time.
  • Write your question in a line or two. A clear question makes the reading more useful.
  • If you do not know your time of birth, say so when you book.
  • If you like, work out your core numbers first with the Mulank and Bhagyank calculator.

Questions about BNN astrology

What does BNN stand for?

BNN stands for Bhrigu Nandi Nadi. It is a way of reading a birth chart named after the sage Bhrigu and Nandi, and it belongs to the Nadi tradition of Indian astrology.

Is BNN the same as palm-leaf Nadi astrology?

No. Bhrigu Nandi Nadi takes its name from the Nadi tradition, but a BNN reading works from your birth chart, not from a palm leaf. They are different practices, so check which one a reader means.

Do I need my exact time of birth for a BNN reading?

Send the time you have, ideally from a birth certificate or hospital record. If you are not sure of it, say so when you send your details, so the reader knows before the reading.

Can BNN predict what will happen to me?

No reading can promise outcomes. BNN is a way to look at what your chart shows for a question, so you can think it through. The decisions stay with you.

Can I combine BNN with numerology?

Yes. BNN works from your birth chart and numerology works from your name and date of birth, so they use different inputs. Namieta can read your question from both sides if you ask for it.
