Which gemstone should I wear? There are two common ways to answer it. Numerology points to the stone of your Mulank (Moolank) and Bhagyank planets, and astrology reads your Kundli for the lagna lord and the planets that work well for you. The number gives a quick starting point; the chart decides whether a ratna is right to wear. This guide explains both ways, gives the traditional planet to stone table, and explains why strong stones and crystals are treated differently.
In short: your Mulank (Moolank) and Bhagyank show which planets, and so which stones, to look at first. Before you wear a ratna, a Kundli check confirms that the planet works well for you. Blue sapphire, hessonite and cat’s eye need the most care. An upratna (substitute stone) or a crystal is the gentler choice when a ratna is not advised.
The idea behind a ratna
In Indian tradition each of the nine grahas has a ratna (main gemstone). Wearing a ratna is commonly understood to strengthen its planet. That is why the choice matters: strengthening a planet that already works well for you is one thing, strengthening one that is troublesome in your chart is another.
Way 1: by numerology (Mulank and Bhagyank)
In numerology each number from 1 to 9 is ruled by a planet. Your Mulank (Moolank) comes from your day of birth and your Bhagyank from the full date. Each number’s planet then points to a stone.
Example. For a birth on 29 November 1985, the Mulank is 2 (Moon) and the Bhagyank is 9 (Mars). By numerology alone, that points to Pearl for the Mulank and Red Coral for the Bhagyank. Find your own numbers with the Mulank and Bhagyank calculator, or see both stones at once with the gemstone calculator.
This method is quick and needs only your date of birth. Its limit is that it knows nothing about how those planets sit in your chart.
Way 2: by the Kundli
An astrologer reading your Janam Kundli usually starts from the lagna (ascendant) and its lord, the planet that rules your first house. The stone of the lagna lord is commonly the first one considered. After that, astrologers look at the planets that rule supportive houses for your lagna, such as the 5th and 9th, and at how strong or weak each of them is.
The chart also shows which planets to leave alone. A planet that rules difficult houses for your lagna is usually not strengthened, even if it is your Mulank planet. This is why the two ways can disagree, and why the chart traditionally has the last word.
| By numerology | By the Kundli | |
|---|---|---|
| Needs | Date of birth | Date, time and place of birth |
| Starts from | Mulank and Bhagyank planets | Lagna lord and supportive planets |
| Good for | A quick first look | Deciding whether to wear a ratna |
| Limit | Does not see the chart | Needs an accurate birth time |
Planet, ratna, upratna and crystals
The table below gives the traditional stone for each number and its planet, the substitutes (upratna) commonly used in its place, and crystals often chosen for the same planet. Each stone links to its own page, and all nine are on the navratna gemstones page.

Why strong stones need a chart check
Some stones are traditionally treated as strong: Hessonite for Rahu, Cat’s Eye for Ketu, Blue Sapphire for Saturn. They are linked with planets whose effects tradition describes as sudden or heavy, so they are commonly tested and worn only after a careful look at the chart. Blue sapphire (Neelam) is the best known example. A Saturn that works well in one chart may be a difficult planet in another, and the same stone can then be unsuitable.
In practice, before a strong stone is suggested, an astrologer usually checks:
- the house Saturn, Rahu or Ketu rules and sits in for your lagna;
- the running dasha, since a stone for the planet of the current period is read with extra care;
- whether a gentler upratna or a crystal would serve the same intention.
Upratna and crystals: gentler options
An upratna is a substitute stone for the same planet, such as moonstone in place of pearl for the Moon, or yellow topaz in place of yellow sapphire for Jupiter. Upratnas are commonly suggested when the main ratna is not suitable or not available, and are read as softer in effect.
Crystals are a different practice. They are not worn to strengthen a planet; they are kept at home or at work, or worn as a pendant, as a reminder of an intention. Rose quartz in the bedroom for harmony or citrine on a study desk are common examples. Because of that, they are the usual choice when a ratna is not advised.
A word of caution
- A gemstone is part of a tradition. It is not medical advice, and it is not a substitute for a doctor, a lawyer or a financial adviser.
- Do not wear several ratnas at once without a chart check. Some planets are traditionally kept apart: for example, ruby (Sun) and blue sapphire (Saturn) are commonly not worn together, because the Sun and Saturn are treated as natural enemies.
- Buy from a source you trust, and ask how the stone has been treated.
- If you feel uneasy after starting a stone, stop and ask before going on.

Questions about choosing a gemstone
Can I choose a gemstone from my date of birth alone?
Your Mulank (Moolank) and Bhagyank give a starting point, and the gemstone calculator shows the stone of each number. A ratna is traditionally worn only after a Kundli check, because a stone strengthens its planet and that planet may not suit your chart.
Which gemstones need the most care?
Blue sapphire (Neelam) for Saturn, hessonite (Gomed) for Rahu and cat's eye (Lehsunia) for Ketu are traditionally treated as strong stones. They are commonly tested and worn only after a careful chart check.
What is an upratna?
An upratna is a substitute stone for the same planet, such as moonstone in place of pearl for the Moon. Upratnas are commonly suggested when the main ratna is not suitable or is hard to find, and are read as a gentler choice.
Are crystals the same as gemstones?
No. In this tradition a ratna is worn to strengthen a planet, so it needs a chart check. Crystals such as rose quartz or amethyst are commonly kept at home or work as a reminder of an intention, and are a gentler choice.
Can a gemstone cure an illness or solve money problems?
No. Gemstones and crystals are part of a tradition, not medicine or financial advice. Please see a doctor for health concerns and a qualified adviser for money matters.
