Karwa Chauth is the Chaturthi of the dark half of Kartik in the purnimanta calendar used in North India (Ashwin in the amanta calendar used in Maharashtra and Gujarat), kept on the day Chaturthi is running at moonrise. The fast is completed after seeing the Moon and offering arghya. Look a few minutes after the time given: hills and buildings hide the Moon until it has climbed a little.

Sankashti Chaturthi moonrise 2026 and 2027

Sankashti (Sankat) Chaturthi is the Chaturthi of each dark half, kept for Ganesha, and the fast ends at moonrise. Sakat Chauth falls in Magha and Karwa Chauth in Kartik; a Sankashti on a Tuesday is called Angaraki.

The date is the day on which Chaturthi is running at moonrise in the chosen city. When it is at moonrise on two days the first is taken, and when on neither, the day with Chaturthi at sunrise. Months are named in the purnimanta calendar, with the amanta month below. Times in IST.

How moonrise is worked out

Moonrise is the moment the upper edge of the Moon appears on a level horizon at sea level. The times here are computed with the astronomy-engine library from the Moon’s position as seen from the chosen city, not from the centre of the Earth (for the Moon that alone shifts the time by a few minutes). They allow for refraction: near the horizon the air bends the Moon’s light by about half a degree, so the Moon is seen a couple of minutes before it is geometrically above the horizon. For Delhi on 29 October 2026 this gives 8:12 pm, the same minute as the US Naval Observatory’s tables.

Why it moves each day. The Moon goes round the Earth once a month, about 13° a day eastward, so each day it rises on average about 50 minutes later than the day before. Around Purnima it rises near sunset, around Amavasya near sunrise, and on Krishna Chaturthi a few hours after sunset, which is why chauth fasts end late in the evening.

Why cities differ. Places further east see the Moon rise earlier, about 4 minutes for each degree of longitude, and latitude shifts it further depending on the Moon’s path that night. All Indian cities use IST, so the clock time can differ by an hour or more across the country.

For the day’s tithi see tithi today and the full panchang, which also gives Rahu kaal; for the Sun, sunrise and sunset today; for the full and new moons, the Purnima and Amavasya dates.

Questions about moonrise

What time will the Moon rise today?

The box at the top gives today’s moonrise for Nagpur, or for the city you pick, to the minute, and the table gives the next 7 days. Moonrise moves by about 50 minutes a day, so check the date you need.

What time is moonrise on Karwa Chauth 2026?

Karwa Chauth 2026 is on Thursday, 29 October 2026. The Moon rises at about 8:12 pm in Delhi, 8:56 pm in Mumbai and 8:25 pm in Nagpur (IST). The table above lists 15 cities.

Why does the Moon rise about 50 minutes later each day?

The Moon moves about 13° east along its orbit every day, so the Earth has to turn a little longer before the Moon comes up again. On average that takes about 50 minutes more, and the gap changes through the month and the year, from about half an hour to more than an hour.

Why is there no moonrise on some dates?

Because of that daily delay, about once a month the moonrise slips past midnight. The Moon rises late in the evening one day and just after midnight on the day after next, so the calendar date in between has no moonrise at all. The same happens with moonset.

Why is moonrise different in my city?

The Moon rises earlier in the east of India than in the west, about 4 minutes for each degree of longitude, so Kolkata sees it roughly an hour before Ahmedabad. Latitude matters too, together with how far north or south of the equator the Moon is that night.

On which day is Sankashti Chaturthi kept?

On the day when the Chaturthi of the dark half (krishna paksha) is running at moonrise, because the fast ends with arghya to the Moon. When it is at moonrise on two days the first is taken here, and when it is at moonrise on neither, the day with Chaturthi at sunrise. Family traditions differ, so check with your panchang too.
