How to read the table
- Rashi and degree: the sign the planet is in and how far through it (0° to 30°).
- Nakshatra and pada: each sign holds two and a quarter nakshatras; each nakshatra has 4 padas of 3°20′.
- Motion: direct or retrograde (vakri). Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde.
- Next sign change: when the planet moves into the next rashi (gochar). Slow planets can move back into the previous sign while retrograde.
Positions are shown for 6:00 am IST unless you choose a time. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so its degree and nakshatra change through the day; the other planets move slowly.
Where these positions are used
The daily rashifal and the sun-sign horoscope are read from these positions. Your own Moon sign and nakshatra come from the Moon’s position at your birth: find them with the rashi calculator and the nakshatra calculator. Each graha’s mantra, gemstone and remedies are on the navagraha pages, and more tools are on the Vedic astrology page.
Questions about planet positions
Which zodiac do these positions use?
The Indian sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the one most Indian panchangs use. Today the ayanamsa is about 24°14′, so a Western (tropical) position is the sidereal one plus that amount.
What does retrograde mean?
Seen from the Earth, a planet sometimes appears to move backwards through the zodiac for a few weeks. Astrology calls this vakri (retrograde). Rahu and Ketu always move backwards, so they are always shown as retrograde.
Why is Rahu exactly opposite Ketu?
Rahu and Ketu are the two points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s path. They are always 180° apart. This page uses the mean node, the convention of most printed panchangs.
How is this used in a horoscope?
Gochar (transit) readings count the house of each planet from your Moon sign. The daily rashifal is read from these exact positions. For your own chart, the transits are read against the planets at your birth.
How accurate are the positions?
They come from the astronomy-engine library, a published astronomical model, which is accurate to about one minute of arc for the Sun, Moon and planets. Tests check the sign changes against published dates such as Makar Sankranti and Jupiter’s and Saturn’s transits.
