What the card shows
A young man in a red robe over white stands at a table. One hand raises a wand to the sky and the other points to the earth. On the table lie a cup, a sword, a pentacle and a wand, the four suit tools. An infinity sign floats over his head, and roses and lilies grow around him.
The Magician upright
The Magician is the card of using what you already have. Every tool is on the table, and the question is whether you pick one up. It often comes up when the skill, the contacts and the material are all in place and only the start is missing. Think of a home baker who has the recipes, the oven and friends asking for orders, or a student with the syllabus in hand and three months to the exam. Its Golden Dawn planet is Mercury, the planet of skill, speech and trade, so the card favours clear words, quick learning and good communication. One hand up, one hand down: an idea becomes real only when it is brought down to earth. What could you begin today with what is already in your hands?
The Magician reversed
Reversed, the Magician shows talent that is not being used well. It may be scattered across five half-started projects, or parked until you feel ready. Sometimes it points to clever words used to impress or mislead, by you or by someone around you, so check any offer that sounds too smooth. Then come back to yourself. Pick one skill, one goal and one fixed hour a day for it. The tools have not gone anywhere.
In love and relationships
In love, the Magician brings confidence and good conversation. Singles may find it easy to make the first move, and should make sure the charm is backed by real intent. Couples do well to say plainly what each of them wants. As a feelings card, it shows someone who is interested and actively thinking about how to win you over. Watch whether the words and the actions match.
In career and study
At work, the Magician is one of the strongest cards for an interview, a pitch, a presentation or the launch of your own venture. Your skills are ready to be seen. Prepare well, speak clearly and show your work instead of describing it. The card suits trade, sales, writing, teaching, technology and any job where words and skill meet.
In money matters
With money, the Magician points to earning through a skill you already have: tuition, freelancing, design, a craft or a small trade. List what people already ask you to do for them. Be wary only of plans that rest more on clever talk than on real work.
The card’s advice

Yes or no
The Magician is commonly read as a “Yes”. The skill and the means are already in hand, so the card reads as a yes, provided you act.
These meanings follow the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith deck. A card is always read with its position in the spread and the cards around it, so treat them as starting points, not fixed answers.
