The 2nd house in a Kundli: Dhana bhava
The 2nd house is the house of what you hold: money and savings, the family you grow up in, the food you eat and the words you speak. It is commonly read as showing how you build resources and what you value.

- savings, assets and the way money is kept
- the family you are born into
- speech, voice and the way you talk
- food habits and the face
- values and what you hold dear
Maraka (a classical term): Classical texts call the 2nd and 7th houses maraka sthana, as they are the 12th from the 3rd and the 8th (the two houses of life span in the old texts). It is a technical term used with dashas in a full reading; on its own it predicts nothing, and these houses are just as much about wealth, family and marriage.
Planets in the 2nd house
One line for each planet, as it is commonly read when it sits in the 2nd house. A single placement is only a starting point: the sign, the aspects, the lord of the house and the dasha all change the reading.
- Sun: Commonly read as pride in family and status; speech can be direct, so a softer tone helps.
- Moon: Commonly read as a gentle way of speaking and a close bond with family; savings may rise and fall with moods.
- Mars: Commonly read as frank, forceful speech and a drive to earn; arguments over money are worth avoiding. Mars here is one of the Manglik placements counted from the lagna; see the Manglik check.
- Mercury: Commonly read as skill with words, numbers and trade, and earning through speech or skill.
- Jupiter: Commonly read as a supportive placement for savings, family values and wise speech.
- Venus: Commonly read as a pleasant voice, a taste for good food and fine things, and comfort in the family.
- Saturn: Commonly read as careful saving and measured speech; wealth tends to build slowly through steady effort.
- Rahu: Commonly read as unusual ways of earning and a strong wish for wealth; plain, honest speech serves well.
- Ketu: Commonly read as some detachment from money or family matters; speech may be brief or blunt.
The lord of the 2nd house
The lord of the 2nd house shows where wealth and family matters are linked in your life. In the 10th or 11th it is commonly read as earning through work and gains; in the 12th, as money that flows out through travel, charity or expenses that need planning.
In general terms, the lord of a house carries its matters to the house where it sits. A lord in a kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) or trikona (1, 5, 9) is commonly read as supporting the house it rules; a lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th asks for more effort; a lord in its own house keeps the house steady.

| Sign on the 2nd house | Simha |
|---|---|
| Lord of the house | Sun |
| The lord sits in | The 7th house (Makara) |
| Planets in the house | none |
The lord of the 2nd house, Sun, sits in the 7th house. This links money, family and speech with marriage and partnerships. A placement in a kendra or trikona is commonly read as giving these matters support. This is read together with the sign, the aspects on it and the running dasha.
No planet sits in this house; its lord, the aspects on it and the dasha carry the reading.

Questions about the 2nd house
What does the 2nd house rule in a Kundli?
Money and savings, family, speech, food and values. It is called Dhana bhava (Kutumba bhava).
What is the natural sign and lord of the 2nd house?
In the natural zodiac, with Mesha rising, the 2nd house is Vrishabha (Taurus), ruled by Venus. In your own chart the sign on the 2nd house depends on your lagna; the form on this page finds it.
Which planet is the karaka of the 2nd house?
Jupiter. The karaka is read together with the house and its lord in every chart.
Does the 2nd house show how rich I will be?
No single house does. The 2nd house is read for savings, family and speech, together with the 11th (gains), the 10th (work), the 9th (fortune), their lords and the dasha. A chart is read as a whole, and no line on this page is a prediction about money.
Is an empty 2nd house bad?
No. Nine planets share twelve houses, so every chart has empty houses. An empty 2nd house is read through its lord, the planets that aspect it and the dasha.
