How the Telugu calendar works

Months are named Chaitra to Phalguna after the sign the Sun is in at the new moon that starts them; when the Sun stays in one sign for a whole lunar month, that month is adhik (extra). Each day is named by the tithi at sunrise.

Ugadi is Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, in March or April. The Shaka year and the samvatsara name change on that day.

Questions about the Telugu calendar

When is the Telugu New Year in 2027?

On 7 April 2027 (Ugadi). Ugadi is Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, in March or April. The Shaka year and the samvatsara name change on that day.

What are the months of the Telugu calendar?

Chaitra (చైత్రము), Vaishakha (వైశాఖము), Jyeshtha (జ్యేష్ఠము), Ashadha (ఆషాఢము), Shravana (శ్రావణము), Bhadrapada (భాద్రపదము), Ashwayuja (ఆశ్వయుజము), Kartika (కార్తీకము), Margashira (మార్గశిరము), Pushya (పుష్యము), Magha (మాఘము), Phalguna (ఫాల్గుణము).

Is the Telugu calendar solar or lunar?

Lunisolar: months follow the Moon, and their names come from the Sun’s sign. Months are named Chaitra to Phalguna after the sign the Sun is in at the new moon that starts them; when the Sun stays in one sign for a whole lunar month, that month is adhik (extra). Each day is named by the tithi at sunrise.

Which city are the times for?

Sunrise, sunset and the tithi of each day are worked out for Hyderabad, in IST. In other cities sunrise moves by some minutes, and now and then the tithi at sunrise can differ too.

Why can a festival date differ from my local panchang?

Each festival is kept on the day its tithi runs at a set time of day (sunrise, midday, pradosh or midnight). Traditions apply these rules a little differently, so confirm with your family tradition or priest.
