Taurus is the second sign and the first earth sign, falling in the full growth of spring. People born under Taurus are often calm, steady and loyal, and they like life to have a settled rhythm.

Taurus at a glance

The dates follow the Western (tropical) zodiac. The Sun changes sign at a different hour each year, so if you were born around 20 April or 20 May, the exact sign depends on your birth year, time and place.

Taurus traits and nature

In short: Taurus people tend to be steady, patient and fond of comfort and good things. The same steadiness can turn into stubbornness when plans change.

Taurus people usually take their time to decide, and once they have decided they hold their ground. They value comfort, good food, music and things made to last, and they tend to be careful with money.

They are slow to anger and patient with work that takes years. Sudden change is what unsettles them most, so they do better when they are given time to adjust.

Element, modality and ruling planet

Taurus is an earth sign. Earth signs are commonly linked with patience, practical sense and things that last. The other earth signs are Virgo and Capricorn.

It is a fixed sign. Fixed signs sit in the middle of a season and are said to hold steady and finish what they start. The other fixed signs are Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius.

Its ruling planet is Venus, on which traditional and modern Western astrology agree. Its opposite sign is Scorpio, often read as its complement.

Taurus in love and compatibility

In love Taurus is usually steady and affectionate, and shows care through time, touch and small comforts. Trust builds slowly but lasts. They want a partner who is dependable; uncertainty and mixed signals make them withdraw.

The table reads the match with all 12 signs by a common rule: the same element and complementary elements (fire with air, earth with water) read as easy, signs a square apart as tense, and signs that share nothing as mixed.

Western Taurus and the Vedic sign

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons: Aries always begins at the March equinox. Indian astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars, which now sits about 24° behind (the Lahiri ayanamsa). That is why most people’s Vedic sun sign is the sign before their Western one.

In 2026 the Sun enters sidereal Vrishabha rashi on 15 May. So of the people born 20 April to 20 May, those born 20 April to 14 May have the Sun in Mesha (Aries) in Vedic astrology, and those born 15 May to 20 May have it in Vrishabha. These are the Sankranti dates.

Your Indian rashi (janma rashi) is a third thing: the sign the Moon was in at your birth. The Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days, so it needs your date, time and place of birth: use the rashi calculator.
