Amethyst: meaning, uses and who it suits
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and one of the best-known crystals. In India it is also called jamunia, after the colour of the jamun fruit. This page explains what amethyst is, what it is traditionally linked with, how people wear or place it and how to look after it.

What amethyst is
Amethyst is quartz coloured purple by traces of iron and natural radiation in the rock. It often grows lining the inside of hollow geodes. It is hard enough for everyday jewellery, but its colour can fade with long exposure to strong light or heat, and heating turns it yellow or orange.
What amethyst is traditionally linked with
- In crystal practice amethyst is traditionally linked with calm, clear thinking and a quiet mind.
- Many people keep it in a meditation or prayer corner, on a bedside table or on a study desk.
- In numerology and astrology circles it is often suggested as an everyday crystal choice, and it is also given as an upratna; the pairing from this site’s data is shown below.
Numbers and planets it is paired with
These pairings come from the same data as the gemstone calculator: each number from 1 to 9 has a planet, a ratna, its upratna (substitutes) and crystal choices. The Lo Shu direction of the number is where some people place the crystal when that number is missing from their Lo Shu grid.
| Number | Planet | Listed as | Ratna of the planet | Lo Shu direction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | Ketu | Crystal | Cat’s Eye | West |
| 8 | Saturn | Crystal and upratna | Blue Sapphire | North-East |
Tiger’s eye and amethyst are often kept in a meditation or prayer corner.
Amethyst is a common crystal choice for Saturn and is often kept on a work desk.
As an upratna it is a lower-cost stand-in for Blue Sapphire. A substitute for a ratna is still chosen after a chart check.

How amethyst is commonly worn or placed
- Bracelets, pendants and rings are common; amethyst is hard enough for daily wear but can chip if knocked.
- Clusters and geodes are kept on a desk, a shelf or in a prayer corner.
- Keep it out of strong, direct sunlight for long periods, which can pale the colour.

Care and cleansing of amethyst
- Clean it with lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush, then dry it.
- Avoid long hours in hot sun and sudden heat.
- Store it apart from harder stones such as sapphire, and softer ones it could scratch.
- Many people like to “cleanse” a crystal from time to time; plain morning light for a short while or resting it on a dry shelf suits almost every stone. Ask about yours before using water, salt or strong sun.
Real amethyst: natural, treated, dyed or fake
- Natural amethyst usually shows uneven colour, with darker and lighter zones; perfectly even colour can mean glass or lab-grown quartz.
- Glass often has tiny round bubbles and feels warmer to the touch than quartz.
- Lab-grown amethyst has the same make-up as natural and needs a gem laboratory to tell apart.
- Purple chalcedony, dyed quartz and dyed howlite are sometimes sold as amethyst.
For a costly piece, ask for a report from an independent gem testing laboratory. It names the material and any treatment.

Questions about amethyst
Which number and planet is amethyst paired with?
In our numerology data amethyst is paired with Ketu (number 7) and Saturn (number 8). Treat this as a starting point: your full set of numbers and your question matter too.
Why is my amethyst fading?
Long exposure to strong sunlight or heat can pale amethyst’s purple. Keep it out of direct sun, especially on windowsills and car dashboards.
Is citrine made from amethyst?
Much of the citrine sold today is amethyst that has been heated until it turns yellow or orange. It is still quartz, but it should be sold as heat-treated. See the citrine page.
Can I wear amethyst every day?
Yes, with care. At hardness 7 it suits daily wear, but take it off for heavy work and keep it away from hot sun and harsh cleaning products.
Can amethyst replace medical care?
No. Crystals are part of a tradition of intention and reflection, not medicine. Please keep following your doctor’s advice for any health concern.
