Tiger’s eye: meaning, uses and who it suits

What tiger’s eye is
Tiger’s eye is quartz that formed around fine fibres of a blue mineral (crocidolite) which later turned golden brown with iron oxide. The fibres make the shimmering band of light, called chatoyancy, best seen on a rounded, polished stone. Red tiger’s eye is usually made by gently heating the golden kind, and blue “hawk’s eye” is the variety where the fibres kept their blue colour.
What tiger’s eye is traditionally linked with
- In crystal practice tiger’s eye is traditionally linked with confidence, courage and steady effort.
- Many people wear it as a bracelet, or keep a polished stone on a work or study desk.
- It is also commonly offered as an upratna, a lower-cost stand-in for a ratna; the details from this site’s data are shown below.
Numbers and planets it is paired with
These pairings come from the same data as the gemstone calculator: each number from 1 to 9 has a planet, a ratna, its upratna (substitutes) and crystal choices. The Lo Shu direction of the number is where some people place the crystal when that number is missing from their Lo Shu grid.
| Number | Planet | Listed as | Ratna of the planet | Lo Shu direction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | Ketu | Crystal and upratna | Cat’s Eye | West |
Tiger’s eye and amethyst are often kept in a meditation or prayer corner.
As an upratna it is a lower-cost stand-in for Cat’s Eye. A substitute for a ratna is still chosen after a chart check.

How tiger’s eye is commonly worn or placed
- Bead bracelets are the most common way to wear it; pendants and rings are worn too.
- A polished stone or sphere is kept on a work or study desk.
- When it is suggested as an upratna, the finger, metal and day are set by the astrologer after a chart check.

Care and cleansing of tiger’s eye
- Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and dry it; mild soap is fine.
- Keep it away from acids, harsh cleaners and perfume.
- Store it apart from harder stones that could scratch its polish.
- Many people like to “cleanse” a crystal from time to time; plain morning light for a short while or resting it on a dry shelf suits almost every stone. Ask about yours before using water, salt or strong sun.
Real tiger’s eye: natural, treated, dyed or fake
- Real tiger’s eye shows a band of light that slides across the stone as you turn it; printed or glass imitations show a fixed pattern.
- Glass “cat’s eye” beads in many bright colours are manmade fibre-optic glass, not tiger’s eye.
- Very bright red or blue pieces may be heat treated or dyed; ask the seller.
- Real tiger’s eye feels cool and fairly heavy; plastic feels warm and light.
For a costly piece, ask for a report from an independent gem testing laboratory. It names the material and any treatment.

Questions about tiger’s eye
Which number and planet is tiger’s eye paired with?
In our numerology data tiger’s eye is paired with Ketu (number 7). Treat this as a starting point: your full set of numbers and your question matter too.
Is tiger’s eye the same as cat’s eye (lehsunia)?
No. Lehsunia is chrysoberyl cat’s eye, a different and much harder gem. Tiger’s eye is quartz with a similar band of light. Its upratna pairing from our data is shown on this page.
Which hand is tiger’s eye worn on?
As a bracelet, many people wear it on whichever hand feels right. When it is given as an upratna, the hand, finger and metal are set by the astrologer after a chart check.
Is red tiger’s eye natural?
Red tiger’s eye is usually golden tiger’s eye that has been gently heated. It is still the same stone, but the treatment should be told to you.
Can tiger’s eye replace medical care?
No. Crystals are part of a tradition of intention and reflection, not medicine. Please keep following your doctor’s advice for any health concern.
