Rose quartz: meaning, uses and who it suits

Rose quartz is the soft pink, milky quartz that many people know as the crystal of love and relationships. This page explains what it is, what it is traditionally linked with, where people commonly keep it at home and how to tell real rose quartz from dyed glass.

A note before you buy

Crystals are part of a tradition of intention and reflection. They are not a substitute for medical care, and they cannot promise money, love or luck. For any health concern, please see a doctor.

What rose quartz is

Rose quartz is quartz that grows as solid masses rather than separate crystals. Its soft pink colour comes from microscopic fibres of another mineral inside it, which is also why it looks milky rather than clear. It is hard and has no cleavage, so it suits beads, carvings and spheres.

What rose quartz is traditionally linked with

  • In crystal practice rose quartz is traditionally linked with love, kindness and warmth between people.
  • Many people keep it in the bedroom or living room, often as a pair of hearts or two matching stones.
  • It is also given as a gentle gift for a new home, an engagement or a new baby.

Numbers and planets it is paired with

These pairings come from the same data as the gemstone calculator: each number from 1 to 9 has a planet, a ratna, its upratna (substitutes) and crystal choices. The Lo Shu direction of the number is where some people place the crystal when that number is missing from their Lo Shu grid.

Rose quartz is often placed in the bedroom or the South-West of the home for harmony in relationships.

How rose quartz is commonly worn or placed

  • Pendants, bead bracelets and small hearts carried in a pocket are common.
  • Pairs of hearts, spheres or tumbled stones are kept on a bedside table or a living room shelf.
  • The Vastu bedroom and relationship guides below show which parts of the home are commonly used.

Care and cleansing of rose quartz

  • Wash it in lukewarm water with mild soap and a soft brush.
  • As a precaution, keep it out of long hours of strong sunlight, which can pale some pink quartz.
  • Keep it in a soft pouch so harder stones do not scratch it.
  • Many people like to “cleanse” a crystal from time to time; plain morning light for a short while or resting it on a dry shelf suits almost every stone. Ask about yours before using water, salt or strong sun.

Real rose quartz: natural, treated, dyed or fake

  • Real rose quartz is soft pink with a milky look and small natural flaws; very bright pink, glassy pieces are often dyed quartz or glass.
  • Glass may show round bubbles or swirl lines and feels warmer in the hand.
  • Dye often gathers in cracks; look for darker pink lines along the cracks.

For a costly piece, ask for a report from an independent gem testing laboratory. It names the material and any treatment.
