Citrine: meaning, uses and who it suits
Citrine is yellow to orange quartz. It is popular on study and work desks and is also given as an upratna. Natural citrine is rare, and most citrine you will see is heated amethyst. This page explains what citrine is, what it is linked with, how it is used and how to ask what you are buying.

A note before you buy
Crystals are part of a tradition of intention and reflection. They are not a substitute for medical care, and they cannot promise money, love or luck. For any health concern, please see a doctor.
What citrine is
Citrine is quartz coloured yellow by traces of iron. Natural citrine is rare and usually a pale, even yellow. Most citrine on the market is amethyst, or sometimes smoky quartz, that has been heated until the colour turns yellow, orange or reddish brown. Heated citrine is still quartz and is fine to buy, as long as it is sold as heat-treated.
What citrine is traditionally linked with
- In crystal practice citrine is traditionally linked with optimism, learning and steady growth.
- Many people keep it on a study or work desk, and some in the north or north-east of the home.
- It is also commonly offered as an upratna; the pairing from this site’s data is shown below.
Numbers and planets it is paired with
These pairings come from the same data as the gemstone calculator: each number from 1 to 9 has a planet, a ratna, its upratna (substitutes) and crystal choices. The Lo Shu direction of the number is where some people place the crystal when that number is missing from their Lo Shu grid.
| Number | Planet | Listed as | Ratna of the planet | Lo Shu direction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sun | Crystal | Ruby | North |
| 3 | Jupiter | Crystal and upratna | Yellow Sapphire | East |
Sunstone and citrine are often chosen as a reminder to step forward and be seen.
Citrine is often placed on a study or work desk as a reminder of learning and steady growth.
As an upratna it is a lower-cost stand-in for Yellow Sapphire. A substitute for a ratna is still chosen after a chart check.

How citrine is commonly worn or placed
- Pendants, rings and bead bracelets are common.
- Points, clusters and tumbled stones are kept on a desk or in a cash drawer.
- When it is suggested as an upratna, the finger, metal and day are set by the astrologer after a chart check.

Care and cleansing of citrine
- Clean it with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush.
- Keep it out of strong sunlight and heat for long periods, which can change its colour.
- Store it apart from harder and softer stones.
- Many people like to “cleanse” a crystal from time to time; plain morning light for a short while or resting it on a dry shelf suits almost every stone. Ask about yours before using water, salt or strong sun.
Real citrine: natural, treated, dyed or fake
- Natural citrine is usually a soft, even pale yellow. Deep orange or reddish brown stones, and clusters with white bases, are almost always heated amethyst.
- A “citrine” geode or cluster is heated amethyst; natural citrine rarely forms geodes.
- Yellow glass and glass-ceramic imitations feel warmer and may show bubbles.
- Yellow topaz is a different gem; a laboratory report names the stone and any heating.
For a costly piece, ask for a report from an independent gem testing laboratory. It names the material and any treatment.

Questions about citrine
Which number and planet is citrine paired with?
In our numerology data citrine is paired with Sun (number 1) and Jupiter (number 3). Treat this as a starting point: your full set of numbers and your question matter too.
Is my citrine real or heated amethyst?
Most citrine sold is heated amethyst. Deep orange colour, white bases on clusters and geode shapes point to heating. Both are quartz; ask the seller to say which it is.
Is citrine the same as pukhraj?
No. Pukhraj is yellow sapphire, a corundum and a much harder, rarer gem. Citrine is quartz; its upratna pairing from our data is shown on this page.
Where should citrine be kept?
Many people keep it on a study or work desk, or in the north or north-east of the home. It is a reminder of an intention; it cannot promise results.
Can citrine replace medical care?
No. Crystals are part of a tradition of intention and reflection, not medicine. Please keep following your doctor’s advice for any health concern.
