Black tourmaline: meaning, uses and who it suits
Black tourmaline is the jet black, ridged crystal that many people keep near the main door or a work area. Its mineral name is schorl. This page explains what it is, what it is traditionally linked with, how people place it and how to tell it from dyed or glass look-alikes.

What black tourmaline is
Tourmaline is a family of borosilicate minerals in many colours, and schorl, the black, iron-rich kind, is the most common of them. It grows as long prisms with deep lines running along them, often with a rounded, three-sided outline. Tourmaline crystals become electrically charged when heated, which is why it was once called the “Ceylon magnet”: a warmed crystal could pull ash.
What black tourmaline is traditionally linked with
- In modern crystal practice black tourmaline is traditionally linked with grounding, steadiness and a sense of protection.
- Many people keep a piece near the main door, at the entrance of a shop or office, or on a work desk.
- In numerology circles it is also chosen as a crystal for two numbers; the pairing from this site’s data is shown below.
Numbers and planets it is paired with
These pairings come from the same data as the gemstone calculator: each number from 1 to 9 has a planet, a ratna, its upratna (substitutes) and crystal choices. The Lo Shu direction of the number is where some people place the crystal when that number is missing from their Lo Shu grid.
| Number | Planet | Listed as | Ratna of the planet | Lo Shu direction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | Rahu | Crystal | Hessonite | South-East |
| 8 | Saturn | Crystal | Blue Sapphire | North-East |
Smoky quartz and black tourmaline are often kept near the entrance or work area as grounding stones.

How black tourmaline is commonly worn or placed
- Raw crystals or polished pieces are kept near the entrance, on a desk or on a shelf.
- Bead bracelets and pendants are worn too.
- The Vastu main door guide below explains how the entrance is read.

Care and cleansing of black tourmaline
- Rinse raw pieces gently and brush out dust with a soft, dry brush; dry well.
- Avoid sudden heat and ultrasonic cleaners, which can crack crystals with inclusions.
- Store it apart from softer stones it could scratch.
- Many people like to “cleanse” a crystal from time to time; plain morning light for a short while or resting it on a dry shelf suits almost every stone. Ask about yours before using water, salt or strong sun.
Real black tourmaline: natural, treated, dyed or fake
- Real black tourmaline shows long lines along its length and feels hard and cool.
- Dyed black stones and black glass are sometimes sold as tourmaline; glass has no lines and may show bubbles.
- Black onyx (dyed chalcedony) and obsidian (volcanic glass) are different stones with smooth, lineless surfaces.
For a costly piece, ask for a report from an independent gem testing laboratory. It names the material and any treatment.

Questions about black tourmaline
Which number and planet is black tourmaline paired with?
In our numerology data black tourmaline is paired with Rahu (number 4) and Saturn (number 8). Treat this as a starting point: your full set of numbers and your question matter too.
Where should black tourmaline be kept?
Many people keep it near the main door, at the entrance of a shop or office, or on a work desk. It is a reminder of an intention to stay steady; it does not promise any result.
Is black tourmaline the same as schorl?
Yes. Schorl is the mineral name of black, iron-rich tourmaline, the most common kind.
Is black tourmaline the same as black onyx?
No. Black onyx is usually dyed chalcedony with a smooth surface. Black tourmaline is a different mineral with lines along the crystal.
Can black tourmaline replace medical care?
No. Crystals are part of a tradition of intention and reflection, not medicine. Please keep following your doctor’s advice for any health concern.
